I have some brown headliner glue showing along one edge of the roof from a interior installer. How long ago I have no idea, but it is at least 8 years old. I have tried, mineral spirits, WD40, GooGone to no avail. I even tried acetone, it worked a little bit, but afraid to go at it for too long as it might create some other problem

Steam might loosen the glue but it might do more harm than good. If it is not too unsightly I would leave it alone.

I always reach for 3M Adhesive Remover.

We used to use a razor blade. Mixed results and quite risky. The 3M Adhesive Remover might work, but that depends on the glue used. If it`s a non-factory install, then you really have no way of knowing what exactly the original glue product was.
