Headlight restoration

Saw this Jeep at my neighbors house and just had to offer the service.:D:D He was very happy with the outcome to say the least.

Process was multiple steps of wet sanding, wool pad compounding and finished with orange foam/FPII on the rotary.

very nice turnaround. It always pains me to see cars with headlights like the before one.

What grits and type of paper did you use?

1000, 2000, 3000. Or what?

Yeah, it must be nice to be able to see at night eh??

These were so horrible that I started with 400 grit and worked down to 4000 grit before polishing.

Thanks! I have been extremely busy over the past 6 months and haven't had much time to post. I really miss posting and hope to post up all of my upcoming details depending on free time. Keep up the good work!

By the way, where do you get your 4000 grit paper from??

Thanks for the compliment.:)

The paper can be had from here.

Micro Mesh

Ha, ha. Yes, I bought a micro mesh kit a while back for my plastic car models. I think the grit went down to 10,000. Felt about like notebook paper! :)

Yeah, the fine stuff is so fine that you don't think it could possibly work but it does.

incredible results! the headlight looks brand spanking new!

by the way, I hope he puts some sort of protective film over those lights cuz the haziness will come back in no time.

That specific to the Jeeps? I haven't seen any turn back that quick including my own (always where I test out a new process).

This thread inspired me to polish up the headlights & parking lights on my 11 year old pickup. I used some Meguiars Plast-X. It works good for an OTC one-step product. I'd like to try some sandpaper, rubbing & polishing compound as soon as I get some time.

I'd also like to know what kind of protection yall recommend for headlights to keep them from turning yellow.

 Looks like to save time you should have started with 1 grit sandpaper, aka a rock!!!!

Amazing improvement!

Thanks! A *LOT* of the outer layer had to be removed before I could see through the lens and now that I think about it maybe a rock would have been better.:chuckle:

Glad I could inspire a couple/few guys to take this on. For protection I used PC'd UPP.

Amazing! Is the left light actually it's condition as you found it or was it already sanded? I've never seen lenses that bad.
