headlight restoration question

Hi

For headlight restoration, I have read description to clean and clay the surface before sanding.

There are decontamination products, such as ironx which i think are intended for painted surfaces.

Is there any need for decontamination with headlight restoration, or is cleaning / clay enough before sanding? What would be appropriate products

No need to decontaminate, just clean them good and start sanding. As soon as you hit them with sandpaper you're going to take off any surface contamination in the first few strokes. I usually just give them an APC wipedown and start sanding, never had an issue after a couple hundred lights.

Keep in mind that when sanding down a headlight lense, you are removing (what's left) of the coating that keeps it from fading. It's pretty easy to grind down and brighten up the lense, but the key is to apply a polyuethane coating to replicate the OEM coating. If not, the light will fail quicker than ever.
