Has anyone seen the Canon PowerShot G5 yet?

G5? Man, I just bought the G3 a few months ago!! But then again, I love the quality of the 4 Mp pictures that I get from it. However, I would like to get maybe a 6Mp or higher one day!

Any ideas on the specs for the G5?

Thanks

Tim

I could not agree more!! When I first saw the quality of pictures from the camera and then from the printer, my jawed dropped!

I am curious about how much better a 6 Mp would really be? And would it be noticable from a medium quality printer?

I am still in the market for a digicam and I think this is going to be it!!

I already shopped for the CF card (1 GB) :D

Well PrinzII,

I can honestly say that I love my Canon G3!! The pictures are unbelievable!!!:bow

As to the CF 1G, I can only wish! They are very expensive up here!! I just bought a 256Mb, and 128Mb and those were pricey enough!!!

The chief advantage of more pixels is that you can crop your pic and enlarge it without sacrificing as much quality from interpolation.

Explanation (I'm no expert): There are a finite number of pixels in each photo, if you crop, then enlarge, your photo editing program (I like Photoshop Elements for quick and dirty work) has to fill in the blanks via interpolation. You sometimes lose fine resolution.

If you print 5 x 7's, 2 or 3 megapixels are fine. If you have a steady hand and good glass (Canon, Nikon), you can get good enlargements out of 3MP.

Here's the Autopia of digicam sites: www.dpreview.com.

Enjoy!

Welcome fauxpaws to Autopia and Thanks for the great explanation and link!!

I am thinking about moving up to one of Canon's Digital SLR's . I realize that some people still think that the 35mm is superior and it might be;l but, to me, the convenience of a digital far out- weighs the improvements a 35mm could bring.

SLR is still ahead of digitals definitely for postering etc. However, the convienance of digitals is far outweighing that of old film technology.

However, they are not fool proof and 100%. If you had lets say 200+ pics on that 1G card and the card crapped out on you (reading error). You would loose all 200+ pictures. You're not completely overcoming the risk that is inheriant in film tech.

That said, the advance of 6MP isn't really going to benefit the hobbiest. It's really for studio quality type work. I doubt very highly that average to significant above average consumer would ever tell the difference unless it was a side by side photo comparison and even then, lighting etc. would probably have more to do with it.

The new Canon digimarc cameras at 3MP produce some very good quality photo's for about 1/10th the cost. The 4MP with digimarc are very sweet.

Originally, I was going to get a microdrive but with the 1GB cards out, I'll get that instead. The price was about equal for me. :D

My dad jsut got his G5, although I haven't seen it (he lives in another state), I have a G3 that is about 3 months old ( :( ), but it rocks. The G5 is pretty much a G3 with a black body and is 5MP instead of 4. I saw one pic he took with it, and it looked good!

SLR and film are not equivalent terms.

SLR means Single Lens Reflex, which means that you are not looking through a separate viewfinder, you are looking through two mirrors that allow you to see through the actual lens of the camera. When you take the picture the mirror snaps up out of the way, hence the trademark loud *click* of an SLR and the moment that you cannot see through the viewfinder when taking a picture with an SLR.

They make Digital SLR's...the reason being that the best way to know what the picture will actually look like is to look through the lens that will be taking that picture.

I would love to try one of the newer higher res cameras myself but, for what I paid for my camera I still need to get another year or two more of use out of it :) I have had the Sony Mavica CD1000 for about a year and love it. It is only 2.1 megapixel but, I have been very happy with it. All of the pics on my webshots page in my sig were taken with this camera.

My ultimate source for camera evaluations is Phil A on www.dpreview.com

His comment on the 4 to 5 megapixal boost (said that's all this is from the G3, all else is the same) is:

"Four to Five megapixels - 1,167,360 more pixels - 30% increase (Not worth it) "

Here's the link including all specs and a review:

If you want to spend that kind of money there's only one camera to buy, the Sony DSC F717. I got one after doing a ton of research and am extremely happy I did. Nothing in that range performs like this camera does.

I read the review and noticed that the G5 has more noise than the G3 on higher film speeds. I might consider getting the G3 unless the G5 has a firmware update to fix the noise problem (unless that's a limitation of the sensor).
