Hard or soft?

I see a lot of questions about does this car have hard or soft paint,what pads should I use with what products? This drives me nuts! I have never heard Mike Phillips,Jason Rose,Rod Kraft,or Kevin Brown say this car has soft paint and that car has hard paint.what I have heard them say is do a test spot starting with the least aggressive method,paying attention to your technique and procedures and check your results. I know it is with the best intentions but unless they are working on the car with you,no one can tell you what will work. Manufacturers can change clears for numerous reasons during the same day,because of things like vendor changes,savings in the energy it takes to run the dry cycle,and any number of reasons. So I say use products you are familiar with and start easy and work up.Advice on pads and products is great, but there is no guarantee what worked for me on a Porsche will work for you?
so that is my 2 cents,agree or disagree that is what I love about this forum over the others, you can offer an opinion without problems!

Seriously though, my jb bmw would mar just by looking at it wrong.
 
I will have to disagree with that. I know for a fact from Rod Kraft who wrote the training manual for Lexus and Toyota, they may change clear on a daily basis?
 
Assuming you clay the car correctly, you can get an idea of the paint hardness(or softness) when you clay the car; depending on how much marring is left behind.

Though I would argue that if claying causes any significant marring then that claying wan't really done correctly.
 
I would love to clay a car and not cause any marring. Someone tell me how to do it! I guess put no pressure on the clay? And use lots of lube. Would like to skip polishing for people who know nothing about good looking paint, but so far I always polish because most times the paint looks worse after claying.

Sometimes there's no way around it. I never clay without polishing, even on light colors. If the paint is hard, there should be limited marring, if any. Soft, you'll get marring for sure.

Mothers yellow clay rarely marrs for me . Zaino makes a very mild clay bar also, or used to anyway .
