Hammered! 2005 Peterbilt 379 Daycab- Ex loggers truck

Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! This truck came to us from peterbilt to test our limits. It was a trade in from an old Logging company.



This write-up is gonna be a little different then the usual Autopia write up, Detailing these bigO' nasty things can get pretty dirty. I was gonna call my buddy Mike Rowe to come do a show of dirty jobs with us, but we decided not to.



Anyways there are gonna be more pics then words so here it goes



The Truck comes to us from the Peterbilt Senior Sales Manager saying "Here ya go, this is gonna test your limits" and it looks like this

Then after a good thurough washin and we flashed all the aluminum with acid to soften it up and get it to get it ready for the buff and polish! and it came out like this

Having 2 of our employees buffing and polishing all the aluminum with pnumatic rotary buffer @4000rpm and heavy duty compound with 8in 4ply wool pads, followed by a hand polish to a mirror finish. It usually takes about 16 hours to complete a full detail, along with the aluminum getting polished we also detail the inside and buff and wax the cab and Remove Lettering. I Dont take credit for these Big Rig Details, we have an awsome 6 man team that all work together to keep these trucks rollin in and rollin out! so i am giving credit where it is do!:thx

well the diamond plate alone doesn't hurt it that bad, but after all the wheels and tanks and boxes and grille we use about 2 pads a truck for the aluminum.

Working at a big rig collision repair place I know how bad all the aluminum polishing goes. But usually I remove everything.



You guys use heated power washers? We run two Landa's and its a chore just to degrease the rear frame/under the cab/motor to get it ready for sand blasting.



Not that it may be in your time frame, but we just started taking all our wheels off and take them to get milled down and the polished via a machine. Makes my job 100 times easier, lol.

yeah that machine is over $100,000 to mill Down the wheels, way to expensive and you need all the tools and special Jacks to lift them heavy trucks up and take off the wheels, we are just a detail shop, and yeah we use a couple of hotsy's to wash the trucks

What I want to know is how do you buff the aluminum beside the tank straps and the tanks under the door trim? Do you remove the tanks?

Well, you really just gotta angle that buffer up on its side and get as close to the straps as you can, then the rest can be hand pollished,



and kinda the same thing with the small air tanks under the door, ya just gotta get in there with that buffer and cut it down, then hand polish the rest. I never knew that you could make aluminum look like chrome until I started working here!
 
That truck had a rough life....I knew it had to be atleast an 05 with the newer mirrors....but it had an 06 dash. As the 05s still had the black "ergo" dash.



Interior should have been a walk in the park...dash and door panels just a little dirty...no real scuffs....and gotta love the rubber floors as they clean up like new in no time.....but , of course you get to clean all the air vents and other fun tedious things!!



Still getting used to my new 2010 Pete 389...just turned my 08 Pete 389 in for this one....company needed it down at the other hub in Houston.

That is one amazing turnaround!!



I can truly appreciate how much work goes into a detail like this. I have done my fair share of these trucks and know how time consuming they are. The aluminum is a total paint in the a$$ to get looking new again in addition to all of the polishing, interior, etc..



What kind of compound and aluminum polish are you using on the aluminum?



Did you end up painting the interior floor, or was it just dressed? Looks brand new...

Those floors are easy to get looking new.....I usually spray them down with a degreaser...use some water and assorted scrub brushes, then wet vac it all up...let it dry..then hose it down with an armorall type product.
