Hammered 2003 Accord

Hey guys, - A little background, apparently someone was painting a motorcycle around this car and got quite a bit of overspray all over it so the owner took it to someone to get it fixed...and as you will see by the pictures they did a god awful job. I noticed major clear coat failure in the front and was really hesitant to machine it after seeing that. I have had experience with this before and after polishing, the crows feet are really noticable and people dont know it is there so they think i did it. After about 8 hours of trying to reach her she told me to go for it using good judgement to knock down some of the swirls, we both knew this one would not get close to perfect. Also, i was really expecting soft paint here...and in my humble opinion it was rather medium, not soft at all. Anywho, there is still marks prevalant but i think i made an improvement on the vehicle. Process as follows:

Engine

Sprayed down to wet everything

Meguiar's Super Degreaser cut 4:1 and let dwell

Rinsed

Autoglym Powermax 3 via foaming spray head and agitated with SV wheel brush

Wheels and Tires

Wheels and wells got MS SGS cut 3:1

Wheels received CG Citrus Blue wheel cleaner cut 1:1

Tires Dressed with CG Xtreme Shine

Wheels got Never Dull

Arches got Meg's Hyperdressing 4:1

Wash

TBM with Meguiar's Hyperwash

Zym0l Sponge

Blowed dry with leaf blower

Clayed with Yellow clay

Polish

As i said before, this paint was not soft at all. 2 hits of M105 via 4" Edge orange pad on Flex 3401 followed by Menzerna Powerfinish on Edge green 4"...followed by Ultrafina SE on Edge White 4"

This was as aggressive as i was willing to go with this one, and for any car really. The condition was really bad to begin with, but like i said..better but not near perfect...here we go.

Interior

Wipedown with MS Leather and Plastic Cleaner

Leather cleaned with this as well

Mats and Carpet got MS Enzyme at 4:1 and Extraction at 10:1

Optimum Protectant Plus on everything

CG Leather Scent

LSP was JW Acrylic Jett followed by Collinite 915

Overall i had 26 hrs into this one, a pain for sure. The owner was really happy with the work and said it was a dramatic improvement, so thats what we do it for right?

Saw your polishing steps and though "holy cow--this must've taken FOREVER". then I read 26 hours. That = forever to me. lol

Awesome recovery. I can't believe how far gone it was.

Those wheels, however--no amount of detailing will make them look good :scared:

great work ... I recently returned my leased accord and that paint is a nightmare. It chips like crazy and it acts like a soft paint, but it's not that soft. I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks this way about this paint.

Looks significantly better. :)

I agree, the paint isn't quite as soft as everyone seems to think it is. Just did an '04 nighthawk pearl Accord on Sunday and it took more effort than I thought it would.

Thanks everyone...Dustin, i really like the setup i have now. My flex gave me the rashing issues, so i stuck a couple of washers between the bolt and backing plate to give me some more clearance...then i picked up the edge adapter from 3M and picked up a couple of sets of the 4" and 6" pads. Overall i am very pleased with my setup now. The adapter is expensive at 50 bucks but i love it because i can finally use smaller pads, and actually found i prefer using smaller pads all the time. I feel their descriptions of the pad's cut to be conflicting which annoys me but i have found through experience what i think they can do. Overall pleased.

Well to be honest this is the first time i worked on this year/paint code. I quoted my price based upon what i heard about this paint, thinking 2 steps might get it done..possibly 3 so i quoted in the middle. Well after using 4 steps i underquoted, but so is life....im also very glad to hear my observations are not unique, i was frustrated after getting started thinking i wasnt making the ground i should have given what i heard.

Damn man that thing was freakin' DESTROYED! Great recovery!!! :hifive:

As for the softness of Honda paint...the first buff with these cars always seems to be the easiest. After that I've noticed it seems to get harder.
