For detailing in the garage... what types of halogen lights do you use?

  • Light stand? If so... where did you buy it?

  • Replace the bulbs in the ceiling?

  • Replace the bulbs in the garage door opener?

  • Other?

Light stand, twin 500 watt ( 1000 watt total stand). Look no further than the nearest Home Depot,Sears, other local hardware store.

i second bill d's advice, and have that set up...BUT have burnt myself a few times even though the lights are covered by "protective" cages.

Just make sure that you are careful, because the lights get HOT !

I just bought a 2,000,000 candle power "flashlight" with a halogen bulb and want to see how it works. I'll keep u guys posted.

Around $30 although Ace hardware, which is popular down here, occasionally has them for $20. I bet Harbor Freight would be a good valued online source.

No kidding!! I have something similar to yours and Bill's setup that came from Lowes. You can feel the heat coming off that thing way before you even touch it. It works VERY well, but you definitely have to be VERY VERY careful.

Bill......

Thanks... H.D. was the ticket. I picked up the one with a 5 year warranty for $55.00. The one for $30 had a 1 year warranty.

Great! Let the real obsession begin! :D :2thumbs:

Ya... it's pretty funny how this gets started.

I've always taken my black bimmers to a professional detailer. I took this one to him when I got it back from my Euro Delivery....it had water spots on it... still not sure how they got there. He was afraid to use "a wheel" on the new bimmer... so he couldn't get the water spots off.

You can only see them in bright sunlight and at just the right angle. In the garage under normal lights they are invisible.

Months ago... I set up a "poll" on bimmerfest.com to see what products people were using, I also included an option "I just take it to a detailer". I assumed that this option would be the most popular. No way........ only 3.6% took their cars to a detailer everyone else did it themselves ...... that's when my curiousity started.

  • I bought a Pinnacle clay bar kit .. still have not tried it.

  • I bought a Klasse & Pinnacle kit .. didn't remove the faint water spots

  • I looked into vinegar/alcohol/distilled water solution. Made some improvement.

  • I bought the Sonus/PC 7424 polishing kit... will try it this weekend.

  • Just bought the halogen light stand to help with my garage detailing...

My car is beautiful, but these faint water spots (that probably only I can see) just BUG me. :hairpull

My gf is just shaking her head........

So... I have the Sonus kit that I'll try this weekend... going to start on the roof first... then the trunk... then the hood.

Wish me luck... hopefully I won't back into this nuclear light stand and catch my house on fire.

earlier in the thread, I mentioned that I got a 2,000,000 candle power halogen flashlight from Target. I wanted to let people know that it works every bit as good for highlighting defects (as the "stand" lights ) and is hand held.

It doesn't get as hot (probably because I don't leave it on as long), and is MUCH more versatile as far as the angles I can hold the light.

I used to use one, was OK and yes, being protable is a big plus. I have found, as Accumulator observed, different lighting sources reveal defects others cannot or can't as well. This is especially true when working on different color cars. So I have the halogens, the Brinkmann xenon handheld light, 200 and 300 watt incandescents, a hand held flourescent trouble light and the classic 75-100watt incandescent trouble light. All have their place.
