Grumpy Girl Auto Bird Turd Emergency Kit

I'm pretty sure most of us here already have this sort of thing packed away in our trunks. I'n not sure non-autopians would care about this thing since I see many days old crusted bird poop on cars these days. Sometimes I'm tempted to wipe the stuff off other peoples cars.

If you're 'in the know' you probably already have some kind of QD and paper towels or napkins for just such emergencies - and if you're not in the know, most people wouldn't bother.

$28 is way high for what's in there so I don't think it can sell well at all.

And sadly, few people who actually buy it will ever use it

+1, at least if they used it they would attempt to take precautions in paint care but most will just have it sit in the trunk collecting dust. Neat idea though.

Oh come on, those will fly off the shelf for Christmas, half of them on the name alone.

Would you rather have that under the tree (w/your name on it) or say 3 new pads for your polisher? But maybe you're right - I didn't buy a pet rock back when either!

Hey everybody,

I'm associated with Grumpy Girl. We're looking for some good feedback on ways to improve the kit.

I read the recommendations of using QD. Do you feel that could be used in lieu of water to soften up the turds or would that be as a final clean up step before the wax?

Any other recommendations?

Also, we're looking at doing a "male" version of the kit w/o the Grumpy Girl branding of course. :)

TIA,

-Ken

Ken, welcome.

As detail freaks, I don't think any of us here at autopia would touch our car with a microfiber and just water, especially against a "bird turd," some of us not even on a completely %100 clean car.

A QD will provide slickness on the surface, bond to contaminants and assist in removing the "turd" and surrounding dirt/dust/etc without marring the paint. Plus a QD will minimize the pressure needed to remove the "turd" because scrubbing is a big no no.

Hey Ken,

First, I commend Grumpy Girl for the concept. I hope it works out for her. But as waxheads we’re very picky about dealing with paint so I hope she doesn’t take any less than glowing comments by us personally.

I have to agree with Kevin and the others, plain water is not a good choice for wiping. It’s not slick enough. A small container of some kind of quick detailer would be preferable.

Also, the “SHOP TOWELS to wipe up the mess scare the hell out of me. The shop towels you commonly see mechanics use to wipe their hands are responsible for scratching the heck out of millions of paint finishes. They’re just plain abrasive. I recommend more microfibers.

PC.

Ironically, it says they're now on backorder.

Even better than a typical QD would be something with stronger cleaners like PB S&W or FK1 146. Then a little clay for a final touch-up. Used properly that combination would really help neutralize the corrosive effect of the bird bombs as well as anything short of an actual chemical decontamination. For that kind of money I'd really want to see more than one MF, too. Some nasty bird bombs I've dealt with have taken more than one towel for a single cleanup. Of course, I already carry a more substantial kit than that for a lot less of an investment, but apparently they're still selling well enough.

I agree.

Replace Water Bottle with Quick Detailer bottle.

Replace Shop Towels with Microfibers. I would recommend 50/50 content of MFs - more plush for use on the paint and a tighter weave MF for windows.

I recommend the Cleaner wax not be *too* abrasive, possibly rubbing away any previously applied protectants that might be good.

Hey everybody,

Thanks for the feedback!

As many of you know, it's definitely more of a novelty gift that's not necessarily targeted at the expert detailer. Guys like you are more likely to put together something more personalized with lots of expensive products. :)

We will definitely take a look at adding the QD and some of the other suggestions.

Thanks again!
