Griot's Red Apps

Being a typical Autopian, I can't try anything new without feeling the urge to tell my fellow Autopians about it. Yesterday I tested out the Griot's Red Wax Pad and Holder and I'm completely sold. Basically, the pad is the exact same pad that you would use with a PC machine. The only difference is that it comes with a velcro-style attachment that you slip your hand into. This allowed me to apply wax comfortably and extremely quickly. I applied Meguiar's #26 to the horizontal panels on my car and I was able to get a nice thin coat in FAR less time than I would with a small yellow CMA applicator. The only downside to this pad is that because of its size, it's a little harder to avoid trim....which wouldn't be a problem at all with products like Zaino or Klasse. As easy as Zaino is, I think using this applicator would make adding a quick coat of Z even easier.

Here is a picture of what it looks like. Don't let the ugly hand startle you....

Here is another pic that shows just how much larger it is than the small yellow disc-shaped apps a lot of us normally use. The yellow app shown is actually from Meguiar's.....which is actually a little larger than the ones from CMA.

Also shown are the white wax applicators by Griot's. I haven't tested them out yet.

Hi Intermezzo,

Looks like something I will have to add to my detailing arsenal. Thanks for sharing your views on it.

Nice review Intermezzo! :xyxthumbs That applicator appears to have much more surface area then a regular one, that means you get done faster!! Don't worry, the hand didn't startle me. ;)

I like the idea. My fingers sometimes cramp up when polishing a while. This would help a lot. Hey, any excuse to buy something new! Thanks for the review!:up

I have the red too.. they are the same as the ones they sell for use with the PC.. dont have the white ones.. did you also get the two finger small red one too.. for getting into small areas?

It worked well and rinsed right out after I waxed the car..

Great review. I'm placing my order. Gotta find a way to beat Jason's 8 Minutes Z job, and who knows this might be the ticket :D Hopefully the pad won't soak up too much Z.

definitely looks great, but how long or how many uses would you get out of the pad before needing to replace it.

gb, that's a good question. I'm not sure how long it would last. A lot of it will probably depend on whether you use it for wax/polymer or a polish. Another factor might be how careful you handle it when washing. Griot's has a lifetime guarantee on their products...but I'm sure it doesn't apply to applicators. In any event, it's not a cost-effective alternative to using the $1 yellow foam apps. You're paying more for an applicator that will reduce the amount of time it takes to apply product on your car.

The white pad is just another applicator sold by Griot's which I haven't tried out yet. They aren't quite the size of the red apps, but they are still much larger than the small yellow ones I've been using. Also, they seem very easy to hold due to their thickness.

As an update, I tried using this same pad with Zaino and it didn't work out very well. Earlier I posted that this pad would be perfect to use with Zaino, but that isn't the case at all. Every time I tried to apply Z, the pad would just soak it up and I had to strain really hard to see any discernible amount of product on the car. So basically my conclusion is that while this pad works great for liquid waxes like Meguiar's #26, it's terrible for Zaino.

I have both the red and orange apps from Griots garage for my Pc.I took some velcro and some 1" elastic and attached it to the back to make a hand app. You are right the bigger the pad the faster your done.
