Griots Bumper & Trim Review

Intercooled

I posted here a couple weeks ago asking if anyone has used Griots "Bumper and Trim restorer". No one replied. On the Hummer forum a few guys have tried the product and spoke very highly of it. I have used Back to Black, Black Again, 303, and other products that would initially look nice but would wash off fairly quickly by either rain or washing. The H2 has a problem of the plastic front and rear bumpers bleaching out from the sun and washing. This product which was suggested by the forum is a dye. I was a little reluctant to try it but with all the products I have treid I think that I had nothing to loose. The report from the Hummer forum is that it has been a year and it still looks great.

I ordered some from Auto Anything which has free shipping and recieved the product in abour 6 days for $12.99. Instructions are simple. prep the area with a cleaner and apply. Two coats for greater luster. The bottle is supplied with an applicator top. From the Hummer forum, one gentlemen suggested to cut off the top and use a foam paint brush and store the rest in a mason jar. That is exactly what i did. I cant imagine using the supplied foam applicator top.

I prepped the rea with denatured alchohol and then masked off the area that might get close to the my foam paint brush. I kept a wet rag near me to wipe off any residue that might get on the paint or chrome.

Here in the front bumper you can see how the plastic has gotten blochy looking:

Dorr handle bucket before, whiteish on top and bit blochy also:

I applied the first coat and went on real smooth just like a very thin stain. The instuction say to allow 15-20 minutes drying time. The first coat covered nicely but i could see some brush strokes and a liittle blochyness. I had lunch and added a 2nd coat about 2 hours later. the 2nd coat hid the blochyness and 90% of the brush strokes and gave a much more uniform finish. The dye dries rather quickly. I tried to blend it in with long even strokes as best i could. The color is perfect and the luster is damn close to factory appearance. It leaves a satin finish. I like that it was very thin and not like a paint consistency. I was worried that if it was thick that ot could chip or peel. Its a true dye, very thin.

Over all I really like product and it looks great. I will have to see how it holds up through rain and washes and report back about the durability. I only used about 1/8 of the bottle. A little goes a long way. I'm hopping this will do the trick with helping my plastic bumpers look detailed and like new. I figure even if I have to reapply once a year ,that would be acceptable to me. It took a little time to complete the project and application wise I would reccomend the product.

Instructions 10

Application 7 ( the supplied applicator would be useless)

coverage 10 ( little goes a long way)

cost 10 ($12.99, pretty good for the amount you get)

appearance 8 ( still can see a few minor brush strokes and very minor unevenness in certain areas, nothing to worry about.)

final Luster 9 ( looks good to me, a satin finsh, very close to factory.)

Durability * ( undetermined at this point )

Too bad I cannot afford to buy anything from Griots.

I looked on their website once, they wanted $25 for a drying towel! That was a good laugh.

That white on the door buckets was from someone using a wax that wasn't trim friendly.

Megs Ultimate Protectant works great as well and can be had OTC for $10 or under.
