Griot's Buffer and What Pads To Use?

I am torn between what buffer to get...PC, UDM or Griot's. From looking at the Griot's and looking at how pads mount to the PC and UDM what aftermarket pads like Lake Country will mount to the Griot's?

I have a Griot's. I use 6-1/2" Lake Country CCS pads, and I love them. The Griot's has much improvement over the PC. Better Switch, cooling fan, and better handle.

The handle on the Griot's is what I like and the fact they are an established business with a great garuntee/warranty. I am not even sure who the heck makes this Ultimate Detailing Machine these wbsites advertise and sell.

Dang am I confused with out being able to personally look at these products!

Did you see the thread href=http://autopia.org/forum/ultimate-detailing-machine/99371-bad-udm-problems-vid-inside.html?

Doesn't seem too promising. I haven't had any problems with my Griot's. I've detailed about 3-5 cars a week since April with it. Works like a champ.

DavidB is responsible for the UDM and you're on his website...

So this website is the manufacture...or this site get's someone in China or Mexico to build it? Basically what Griot's does?

Have you checked out the thread titled "Bad UDM PROBLEMS"?

Nothing like that with the Griot's. I've been using it since April without any problems. Over 100 vehicles detailed. Works like a champ.

Yes I have and that is what is turning me off on the UDM...motor and switch issues.

like anything else, there are going to be a few bad apples in any bunch. joe from superior shine did a side by side test with the griots and PC (not UDM which has more power) a while back, and he favored the PC as it had more power, etc. if i were to get any dual action random orbital, the griots would be the last one on my list... good luck!

I also recommend the UDM, it has more power than the PC.

One obvious shortcoming the Griots has is a non-standard backing plate. It doesn't use a standard BP like the PC and UDM. The Griots BP is held on with screws. What this means is the availability of BP's will be limited, especially if you want to use 4" pads with a 3.5" BP.

Read the following thread for a review of the Griots polisher (skip to post#47 for the final conclusion):

The switch issue on the UDM has already been addressed and corrected; the switch on the one I have works fine. As for motor problems, I'm not aware of a widespread issue with those. You'll hear more about any problems here from the PC or UDM because very few members use the Griots polisher. I'm not saying it's a terrible unit, but the power and BP issues would personally steer me away from that as a choice.

Thanks for that link!

I have owned a Griots, a Porter Cable, and a Flex. Plus have used rotaries, and UDM. Gave away the Griots. Much less power, non-standard backing plates, etc... Bogs down routinely. Definitely bottom of the list. I use the PC for sealant application and carpet brushes. The Flex is rapidly becoming my workhorse. If I didn't give away the Griots, it would never, ever be used anymore.

YMMV. Just my $0.02

I am going with the Griot;s buffer. I will only be useing it on my personal cars and am not in the detail business. Griot's is more powerful than the PC and has a nice tight orbit pattern. I was going to get the UDM but on all these websites I noticed a lot of people with motor and switch issues. There was even a video of UDM with these issues.

The Griots is significantly LESS powerful than the PC, not more.

Used them both side-by-side over the weekend. No comparison. I'm sure many others will agree. Griots bogs down much more easily.
