My son told me that when he made the PGA Tour, he would buy me a Ferrari. He was about 18 at the time.
After a successful college golf career (including qualifying for 2 US Amateur Championships), he turned pro and played the Hooters Tour.
He "Monday qualified" 2 times for PGA events and made the cuts in both tournaments! He then Monday qualified for a Nationwide event and finished in the top 25.
Last year, he went to Q School trying to make the PGA Tour and shot 68-67-68-69 and tied for 19th place. Unfortunately, only the top 18 and ties moved on. He decided to "get a real job".
He's now successfully working for a real estate company and told me a week ago to save April 6 as a "guys' morning" together (he's 26 years years old). When we left home Saturday morning, I still had no idea where we were going. We ended up at a small town airport about an hour and a half away. Gotham Dream Cars had set up a road course, including an 85-90 mph straight, a left chicane to a right hairpin, another chicane, followed by a slalom of 3 "S" turns and a hairpin to the finish line.
My son said, "Dad, I'm not going to be able to buy you a Ferrari, but I'll pay for you to drive one".
We each drove 4 laps on the course in a Ferrari F430 and it was the time of my life!
As far as I'm concerned, my son has more than fulfilled his promise, as I've now had the experience of driving a Ferrari in a spirited manner, without having to make payments or insurance. In talking about our experience, we found a retired doctor who has a 430 who will let us drive his!
What a wonderful present from my son!
