Got a ticket, what are my options?

Yeah drivin my moms BMW that was replacing the truck while it is being fixed, by the same cop as the one in on my wreck, and in front of my G*D DAMN house!!! What an embarrasment that was. Radar did not go off, he just thought I was goin fast. "said" he clocked me at 68 in a 55, but like I said, radar never went off. He sure slammed on brakes fast and I just pulled over b/c I knew I was in trouble. Ticket is $140, what options do I have to deal with this? Is there really any way to make this better? I used a lawyer on my last ticket 2yrs ago, but this one I dont know about.

Yall got any tips?

You can always get a lawyer and try to plea bargain it down; did you admit to anything? Pulling over before he lights 'em up is half an admission...my cop friend says always refuse to make a statement when pulled over or involved in an accident--that is your right.

well, i stalled when I saw him light it up and when he was behind me i pulled over, i didnt admit to anything either

yeah, but more insurance cost and points?

if you haven't gotten a ticket within the past three years, go to traffic school and that way your insurance company won't find out about it...

So he was going the other direction, passed you, then jammed on the brakes and turned around and pulled up behind you? Had you slowed down by then? Did he say he clocked you with radar? If it's a radar ticket there's always the standard calibration questions, etc, which might get you off on a technicality. If he paced you (or says he did), it's going to be his word against yours.

always take it to court!

dress nice and talk to the officer & judge with respect

I have had a few tickets and this have always payed off for me

good luck

I worked with a traffic "expert" and he could call out the speed of a moving vehicle pretty daggon accurate. :)

I remember reading that the ideal use of radar was just as a verification of the speed estimate of an experienced officer with a "trained eye".

So true. The "trained eye" can convert how fast you pass lane markers to your speed. Just need a few things with known distances and you're had.

I *hear* that you can go to court and ask to talk to the prosecutor beforehand... if you're nice they will usually work with you and reduce the points/fees. It's worth a shot.

otherwise, try going to school... but if you pay, then you get the full points. Do everything you can before paying up!

Usually a reduction in points requires a higher fine or other fees. That's their incentive for the "bargain"...the time in court for a speeding ticket is pretty much the same either way, it's not like they're avoiding a jury trial...although in NJ it is your right to ask for that.

I suppose it varies with the jurisdiction, but that's what all the LEOs I know say.

I wouldn't be surprised if you did come out of this one a lot better by going to court and presenting yourself well (be prepared for any questions that might come up). But I doubt you'll get off completely, 68/55 is enough that there's no way they'll think you weren't over.
