Gonna dip my toe in the rotary waters later today...

I want to start really slowly. I'm thinking of doing the side of the car with IP and a polishing pad, then FP and a finishing pad. I just want to get a feel for how it works.

Does this sound like a good idea, or a waste of time from which I'll learn nothing?

i've never used a rotary before but...

from reading it's my understanding that vertical surfaces are the hardest to polish on w/ a rotary. horizontal surfaces are more forgiving as far as using the correct pressure and keeping it moving and so on. just my .02

I think you'll have more control if you work on a horizontal panel like a trunk lid or hood. Something where you are not bending over too much or having to squat. Even if you are sitting you won't have as much control as if you were standing because the weight of the machine is much more controllable when polishing the trunk, for example, than a door where your arms and shoulders are both holding the machine and working it.

Plus its easier to judge results from a horizontal panel using various light sources. Have fun with your new toy!! :up

I tried it...I liked it.

Just go slow, build up speed and pressure carefully.

I only use mine where there are troubled areas but I'm glad I got it and glad I worked with it so I feel comfortable enough to use it.

Put the rotary together with SSR2 and imperfections are a thing of the past. :D

I'm going to use the Chicago Electric that I got for $25 fron Harbor Freight (it's the same as the Vector).

I don't want to do the hood because its been polished so much, the paint's pretty thin. Maybe I'll do the decklid.

Mosca- Heh heh, welcome to rotary-land ;). I think you'll like it (as long as you're careful).

I'm with Bretfraz on this- yeah, work on the trunk lid.

Your product/pad combos sound good to me. I'd stay on the lower part of your speed range, 1200 should be plenty for the Menzerna (since plenty of people use it by PC).

Seems like there's a new rotary out by Chicago. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=41213

as opposed to the older model http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=46507.

The newer one looks like a Dewalt. It's on sale right now for $30 (local ads). Good deal? Decisions decisions...

The new one looks like it only has two speeds also, not continously variable! "Two speeds for a custom finish" :scared
