Going Mobile.. Finally!

Hey guys, been reading alot on this site and have found it really helpful, as I'm finally getting started in the mobile scene. I just bought a 2001 GMC Safari Cargo rig and about 2 weeks ago I purchased a 5.5 Honda 2200 PSi PW.

Next thing on my list is a good generator. I was at PartSource the other day and they're selling a "Champion" 4000 Watt Generator for $400. Does anybody here have experience with this unit? I'm interested in it but I don't want it if it's junk. I've always been a Honda guy, but for the price, I'm interested in this one if it'll run a vacuum effortlessly. In your opinion, what's considered powerful enough in the world of mobile detailing? (As far as watts go).

Thanks in advance for any info.

Your vacuum should run about 1200w, so 4000w is plenty.

A $400 generator will have the following flaws:

1. Wattage is often overrated

2. Thirsty engine

3. Noisy

4. Engine or generator could fail

If you can afford $1800, the Honda EU3000is is worth every penny, is dead quiet, and sips gas.

If you can't, the Champion 4000 is a fine place to start.

Have you also looked into a water smart model for your operation? It will reduce your start up costs, will make your quality and business stand out from the rest, and will be more profitable.

AppliedColors: Thanks for the info. I do have a hard time trusting those cheaper chinese built engines. I'll give it some thought before I make a final decision.

Yvan: Can you enlighten me with some details on the water smart setup?

Rhino,

Look into it before buying equipment. You need to look at your business model and where and how you plan to do cars. My model calls for no water discharge. I also want as low noise pollution as possible so no generator- maybe the EU unit, but nothing more. I'm working on an inverter set up that charges at night. I do not need to run anything but a vac motor and maybe an orbital sander during the day so not much power needed.

There are a few other things coming down the pike in eco washing and detailing, but won't give that out before the products are made/produced and made public knowledge. That said, the future with State Water Control Boards is pointing to zero discharge, not containment of discharge.

If you have a city program for eco or water smart businesses, check it out.

I passed inspection last week and will receive free publicity soon via the city's site, city run ads, and Mayor's office.

Good luck!
