Glaze before Sealant

Whats the overall consensus on applying a glaze before a sealant? Is it something that is highly recommended or not really necessary? The products that I am using right now are Menzerna IP & FPII with Blackfire Sealant. Should I add Menzerna Finishing Touch Glaze to my product collection and use it before the Blackfire? Thanks!

Opinions will vary on this subject but I personally never had any problems with bonding when I used glazes before sealants. The FPII will leave the finish looking awesome so the glaze in this case might not even be necessary. My glaze of choice has always been VM and Ive used EX,EX-P and UPP with no problems whatsoever. But I have never used the Finishing Touch Glaze.

I like using 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. I used it before Blackfire and it came out very nice. I used FTG on my last detail, but it's tough to say whether I needed it or not because I used FP II beforehand. I'm not sure if it made a big difference because the FP II already made my black TL-S stand out. I would definitely put on again before slapping another coat of FMJ though. I know there's a debate going on about glazes hurting a sealant's durability, but I emailed the folks at Classic Motoring and Terry Freiberg himself answered my email. He said their sealants' durability is not compromised by glazes. That's good enough for me!:xyxthumbs

BTW, I would definitely use a glaze before carnauba.

Thanks sQuashed and termigator! I would think a glaze would only help and now I am just debating between Menzerna Finishing Touch Glaze, VM, or RMG. Termigator are you saying that with FPII there is no real reason to use Finishing Touch or you just don't see much of a difference between FPII and FTG?

Just my humble opinion, but I think using a

glaze is always ideal when possible. FPII is

really great, but after applying VM and topping

it with WG, the surface takes on a really great

sparkle. Nowadays when I do a full exterior detail,

I always use a glaze under my wax or sealant.

When I tried FMJ with and without FTG underneath, the plain side seemed to last longer. But I only did a small test section, so I wil test again to make sure.

Would be nice if FTG did not affect durabilty, but I fear that it may.

The difference is very small. I doubt most people would even notice. The only reason I notice is because I'm a lot more discriminating than most people. I guess if you're on Autopia, you're probably the same way too. I just suggested that you might not need it right after FP II because FP II is supposed to get rid of most of the minor flaws on the finish. I just use it because it will ensure I cover up anything I might have missed with FP II. I guess I'm anal about.:p

From some testing I did when pulling my black car in and out of the sun, FTG seems to do a good job at reducing the size of swirls you do not want to polish out. However, if you do IP/FP before hand, it may not make as big of a difference.

After the dealer swirled up my car again, I decided not to do another swirl removal and hide what I can with FTG. Works fairly well.

Thanks for the info everone! I am now sure that I will try a glaze on one of my cars and see how it looks. The last question I need answered is Menzerna Finishing Touch Glaze or RMG? I would think that RMG is the way to go on Black, but I would love to hear other opinions before I place my order.

Edit: Actually going over some of the responses I have recieved it seems that the Menzerna Glaze really doesnt appear to provide much visually. Has anyone experimented with RMG on a dark car? If so was it any more noticalbe than other glazes?

what if i do it this way: polish -> sealant -> glaze -> wax (carnauba) vs putting glaze before sealant. will it work? there will still be paint layer protection (from the sealant) and the wax will just be the "protection" for the glaze.

my products are:

polish (Autoglym SRP) --> sealant (soft99 Geki) --> glaze (3M IHG) --> wax (carnauba: moms deep crystal or synthetic: 3M LW)

Holy old thread batman! :chuckle:

Yes that combo would probably work. I don't know about 3M IHG, but as long as it has no "cleaners" or "polish" in it (which would take off the sealant) you should be okay.

Personally, I use Chemcial Guys EZ Creme Glaze before just about any LSP because it can be used before sealants.

When using a finishing pad the RMG just kind of disappears as you work it in...... very easy to use with a PC.

I was using a blue p2 pad so work it in until its gone huh? Thanks!
