Glass Spots: cause and prevention

My new Mazda3's windshield has water run-off stains which didn't succumb to either IG or Bon Ami (spray foam glass cleaner). I've been reading many of the multitude of threads discussing how to deal with this problem, and will be "upping the ante" in my cleaning approach tomorrow.

None of the threads I read dealt with the following questions, however (I apologize if they have been covered and I missed them):

  1. What causes these marks? Why are they so difficult to remove?

  2. Most importantly, how can they be prevented from showing up again?

    Thanks

Usually minerals in the water and acid rain are the cause. I found that the only thing that can safely remove them is Zaino Z-12 with elbow grease. Using a good wax or sealant on the windshield will help, and just like the car's paint, don't let the water sit on there too long or the stains will be etched in place.
