Getting rid of mildew smell from carpet

I have an older car that I use as a spare. A seal inside the door went bad and caused water to leak into the rear floorboard when it rained. Several days went by before I noticed the problem. I had the seal replaced and the car no longer leaks. I plan on pulling the passenger seat out and giving the carpet a good washing and extraction with my wet vac. Is there anything I can use to get rid of the mildew smell, or will the carpet need to be replaced?

Try a new car odor bomb from top of the line, if that doesn't work you need a total saturated enzyme treatment. Carpet wont need to be replaced, it can be treated, but it sometimes it can be a hassel.

Automagic sells an odor eliminator that works pretty well. Id extract it w/a shop vac like you already did then try some kind of mildew remover or mal odor eliminator that should kill the germs and prevent any mold from developing and your smell should go away in a few days.

Mildew / Mould:

Dirt and moisture are essential to mildew propagation, Remove the seats and thoroughly clean the carpet with a carpet cleaner and a disinfectant. Then let it air dry, ensuring that it is completely dry.

The carpet backing will absorb the most, spray the affected areas with a disinfectant (both the carpet backing and the carpet) clean the carpet using steam extractors upholstery attachments, and then re-install the seats, to eliminate the bacteria that creates mildew:

Methodology

·Use a medium soft brush and a 4:1 solution distilled water / Ammonia and then rinse with cool clean water

·For tough stains use a mixture of one (1 tspn) teaspoon Ammonia / quarter (0.25) cup Hydrogen Peroxide / three (0.75) cup distilled water and then rinse with cool clean water

·Once fabric is dry apply a fabric protection (303TM High Tech Fabric Guard)

To eliminate the musty smell use an odour-neutralizing mineral made from porous volcanic rock (Elite®). This type of product absorbs odours, eliminates stale musty air, and will reduce any noxious oil or gasoline fumes. It is non-toxic and when it stops working can be re-charged by warming in a microwave or in the sun, when it stops working can be re-charged by warming in a microwave or in the sun. Or lightly spray with an air neutralising disinfectant (Lysol Neutra Air®) that is non-toxic, non-allergenic, fast acting without a cover up scent or an offensive perfume smell
