Getting ready

Probably not too exciting to you pros out there but my Porter Cable 7424XP arrived yesterday and my Duragloss 601 and 105 will be here today.

This will be my first experience with a real DA polisher. Luckily my car isn't in bad shape so no real paint correction is needed. Just hoping for the best shine I've ever put on a car.

Eric

You're probably right. My car is pretty good but my Wife's 2007 Pilot needs a bit of work. I'll get the feel of the machine by applying the Duragloss products to my car. Overkill yes but more fun to me than applying them by hand.

The Pilot will need some "correction" before the final wax is applied.

I'm just not sure that much "shine" will occur from using a PC and DG601. You're aware that the use of the term "polish" by DG (and Zaino) is a quaint term, and we would refer to those "polishes" here as LSP's?

I thought the 601 was the polish bonding agent and the 105 that I mentioned above was a polish.

LSP = Last Step Product, got it.

So the 105 won't make it shine?

105 is a polish in Duragloss/Zaino parlance, but is not a polish as we talk about them here. I'm sure that applying these by machine will result in a "shinier" surface than when you started, but you aren't really going to be doing any surface refinement as most people do here.

What pads do you have?

601 is a paint cleaner and bonding agent making anything put over it adhere better. 105 is a paint sealant. You can apply them by PC (speed 3) but most do it by hand. You're not going to do any correction with either product.

I'm coming from a background where "shiny" to me is a nice coat of hand applied Turtle Wax 2001 in the fluorescent green bottle. :woohoo:

I have white and black Lake Country CCS 6" pads.

I guess before I dive in should I be doing more surface refinement before applying this LSP? The car is 1.5 years old and the finish is still very good.

Sorry for all the new guy questions.

Eric

Well, before this degrades into you spending a lot more money, etc. I'd try a portion of your car with the 601 on a white pad, following the directions for cure time, and then the 105 either by hand or with the black pad. If all you've ever done is hand-apply some cleaner wax, this may wow you.

Make sure you do a good wash first, and you might want to pick up a clay kit and use that before you start with the PC.

BINGO!! This is all I'm hoping for.

If/when this happens everything else is a bonus.

Definitely going to do a thorough wash before applying the products and I'll look into the clay kit.

Thanks Again,

Eric

I guess one other thing, it's possible, especially if you don't clay, that using the 601/white is going to bring up a lot of dirt off the surface. If your pad turns blackish, I'd think about wiping off the 601 residue and doing it again, rather than applying the 105 on top of dirty 601 residue. Or do the 601 instructions tell you to wipe off before doing the next step? I've never used it, I was under the impression that you left the haze and went over that with the final step.

That's the way I understand it too. Leave it on and apply the 105 on top. If it turns the pad blackish I'll wipe it off and re-do before applying the 105. Good idea.

Thanks,

Eric
