Getting A Car Back From the Bodyshop?

Hi Guys,

My car has been at the dealership bodyshop for about 10 days having my bumper repaired. Ive already asked them not to "detail" it but do I need to decon or clay the car after getting it back? Im assuming there will be compound all over it and who knows what else. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would inspect the car very carefully prior to accepting delivery. Some auto body shops are awesome and make sure that there is no compound residue; others.. not so much. Be sure to follow the instructions that they give you in reference to washing and polishing/waxing/sealing.

hawgs74- I agree with the inspection, but I'd be careful about their advice. Some shops use a high-filling glaze to conceal shoddy work, and then tell customers to not wash it (or to wash with plain water only) or somesuch in hopes that it takes a while for the glaze to go away (and their work to be exposed).

If they redid the bumpercover, I sure wouldn't expect/want/accept them touching the rest of the car (and I have bumpercovers redone fairly often).

You'll know whether you need to clay/decon the car once you get it back to somewhere you can do a proper inspection (often tough to do at their shop). If they did something really serious (e.g., overspray, significant marring, etc.) I'd contact the shop mngr about it (not saying I'd necessarily let them fix it...would depend on what happened).

EDIT: They *did* paint the bumpercover "off the car", right? You said "bumper repair" so I assume (uh-oh! :nervous: ) that means they repainted the plastic cover that's over the bumper proper....

After reading your answer.. I concur. The auto body shop I use for my repairs does things the right way, I forgot that not all shops are the same... :doh
