Gettin the hang of a rotary: 2002 Volvo V70

Did this one today, gave the owner a discount, as I'm learning with a Makita 9227. Fortuneatly, everything worked out ok, and I didnt burn the paint or leave any holograms :). According to the owner, it hasn't been waxed since they bought it, but they did get the paint sealant at the dealership :o. No beading whatsoever when it came to me . Not in bad shape otherwise though, they were nice enough to declutter the inside before bringing it to me.

P.S. Any other Northerners suffering under the heat? It was about 90 degrees today, and it SUCKED. I almost wish I was still using the SSRs, as PO85RD and PG were damn near impossible to remove if left on for more than 5 minutes.

Awesome job there Tim. I bet the Makita was fun to use. Are you getting the hang of it?

The heat is horrible. I just don't understand how it can be 90 degress in Maine. I went and bought another air conditioner today.

The polishing step took about an hour, including wiping off all the splatter (it would have probably taken 45 if i had been smart enough to tape). I figure 2 or more with the PC to get a similarly abused car to a similar result. For the weekend warrior, the time savings arent worth the learning curve. For the seasoned veteran, GO ROTARY! :).

on the note about the heat, here in chi-town we are in our 10th straight day of 85-90 or so degrees and the humididty (since there is a possiblity for rain everyday so far ) the air is just soo damn thick :o

Mid 90s here and it feels great! Been pretty humid too. My boys and I worked outside all day (much of it in the sun) then went to the park where they ran and I skated.

Great work, Timmah!

Paint, engine and interior all looks terrific! Keep us posted on your rotary edu-mah-cation.

The engine is my favorite part to do. First, I tinfoil off any electrical parts (alternator, connectors, etc). Then, all the really grimy parts like the block, oil filler, etc, get heavy duty solvent degreaser (I use Advance Auto Parts brand, but Gunk is the name brand in that field). The rest of the engine gets straight APC, agitated via Black Magic rim and tire brush. Let it sit for 30 seconds, spray off with a hose carefully.

Start the engine, spray liberally with BnB cut 50:50 with water, and wipe with a crappy old terry towel to even out the shine. Let run for 10 minutes or so, and shut off.

Finally, once its done, all the painted metal is gonna be a mess from tire shine, etc. Go over it quick with AIO, wipe off with a soft terry rag. Enjoy :). Took me 20 minutes on this car, and I spent longer than I usually do. You can do a quick and dirty job in 5 (douse in heavy duty degreaser, hose off, spray with cleaning tire foam). Thats not very Autopian, but it works :).

Looks fantastic! Any additional pics? Two questions . . .

How do you like Blue Natty’s and how does it compare to the original Natty’s?

I’ve never used my Sonus pads via rotary (good idea) . . . care to comment on the green pad and how it compares to use with PC?

I'm quite happy with blue Natty's, however it doesn't seem to play nice with S+G, so I'm looking for a new QD at the moment (got a gallon of the Chemical Guys on the way).

As for the pad, I love it. I feel that I have much better control with a 6.5" pad than an 8.5" one. I prefer a slightly stronger pad via PC, but I love green on the rotary.
