As always, Mercedes-Benz was proudly present at the 75th Geneva Motor Show. With more than heavy emphasis on diesels, they've presented new, diesel powered concepts. Such as the Vision SL400 CDI, or the amazing Vision SLK320 CDI Tri-Turbo. Yes, 3 turbochargers...

While the bigger roadster produces 315 hp from its 4 liter V8 (and a jaw-dropping 538 lb.-ft. of torque), the little brother pumps out 286 hp and 464 lb.-ft. The SLK320 CDI Tri-Turbo accelerates to 62 mph in 5.3 secs, thanks to its two-stage turbocharging. Two small turbos sit on the outside of each cylinder bank, and a larger one in the middle of the vee. At low engine speeds and loads, all three turbos working, but the small ones do most of the work. When the engine speed/load increases, the large turbo takes over, and the smalls are turned off by a bypass system. Ah, yeah and the car's average consumption is 7.5 liter diesel per 100 km.

BUT, this technology was highlighted with a special newpaint, called ALU-BEAM. Talk about real pearl!!!

This paint "covers the body panels like a metallic skin, emphasizing the design lines more strongly than any previous paint job". - said Mercedes. The paint itself is a silky silver pearl, and with silky, I mean muted silk, NOT shiny!!! It is a kind of opaque effect, but it has clearcoat. It has nice reflections, though.

This paint's remarkable sparkle and brilliance is the result of a newly developed process that was used for the first time by M-B. While the pigments (flakes) in a conventional metallic paint measure between 100-300 nanometers, those in the new Alu-Beam paint are much smaller; read 30-50 nm. In addition, the pigments are specially worked so, that they are more uniformly spread within the paint's surface.

Enjoy!!!

Beautiful paint color. If MB can get the reiliability issues fixed (some say they are now) then I will look more closely at the line.

Yes, there are serious quality and safety issues with MB right now. The problems with the SBC are increasing. MB decided not to install this brake system again in any model in the lineup.

Surprisingly, the best perceptive quality has the smallest Merc, the A-Class. It has the best materials and surface graining, the best tactile quality, the tightest interior & exterior tolerances and by far the best mechanical communication/sound engineering. Close comes the recently introduced B-Class and the new ML, but the others are a bit farther. Next is the new SLK, the E-Class, the improved C-Class, and finally the SL. The S-Class is dated and the G-Class is frighteningly primitive.

I suggest you to stay with Lexus, but the Alu-Beam paint on those Starcars is truly wonderful.

That paint looks beautiful to me. As much as I love paint that shines and looks dripping wet, that color just looks awesome. I truly think it looks like the car just has a blanket of silver silk on it.
