Hi!
I am so glad I found this site. I have been detailing my vehicles since day one....certainly not hardcore, just over the counter retail stuff. But I take pride in my work and I always get comments on my vehicles. Currently I have been using Meguires 3 step system, Meguires Gold and Eagle One Wet Wax. Up to this point, I have always done everything by hand.

My wife came home today with a little surprise, she bought me a Simoniz 10" random orbital polisher from Canadian Tire...they were on sale. The instructions consisted of 3 lines. Thats why I went looking for a good forum and I believe I have found one!! Is anyone familar with this polisher? I have no idea how to start. These are ar my questions..remember, I'm a newb!!:

1) What type of pads/applicators should I look for?
2) Should I buy a new type of polisher and wax? If so, any over the counter suggestions? I say that because I would like to get started right away...I have some free time in the next couple of days.
3) And the biggie...can I get some tips on how to use this thing? No speeds, just on and off. Really have no idea how to apply and buff with this thing.

I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy, pewter in color and a 2001 Olds Alero silver in color. Both are in excellent paint condition.

Thanks to all who read this!!!

lots of people around here are hooked on the PC (porter cable 7424) and i can voutch for it...its an awesome machine. i dont know the model ur talking about but if its one of the slower spinnin big things that come with a couble bonnets and thats it. then u probally wont take out any swirls or scratches but you will spread wax slower then u would probally by hand.

for the long term i would suggest goin to our sponsors for products. they are awesome and have great deals (poorboys is really good stuff)
for over the counter stuff stick with good names. meguiares is probally the best for otc.

if its the kind of buffer im thinking about it wont be able to buff much. its more or less good for spinning wax over ur car. so dont think it will take out any defects.

You may be right, I have no idea...haven't used it yet. It states that it oscillates at 2600 OPM. Either way, like I said, both vehicles are in excellent paint condition. No swirls, etc. so I am not worried about it having to repair any damage.

Thanks

That was thoughtful of the wife to bring you a gift. :) I would say that if the finish is in good condition, you could probably use the polisher to help apply a chemical polish (such as ColorX) and then a wax or sealant (such as NXT). Keep the bonnets clean and debris free. It might help save your arm some pain, but as stated before, it probably will not do much for defect removal later on down the road. Good luck, and post some pictures if you can in the future!!

Thanks everyone....I am going to go out and get some ColorX and some NXT. Thanks for the suggestions! Any certain type of bonnet is better for applying, buffing, etc? I see they have foam, cotton, etc.

Thanks again!

just a quick note, take back that buffer if you can, you are just as good off by hand, unless you want to buy a PC or similiar. But.....just my opinion. (PS - I used to have one of those years ago, I since threw it away)

I woudn't take the buffer back unless you want to make your wife feel bad. Just use it for now to spread wax on like the other recomended. Then later when your more confident use a better pc.

:yeah . I wouldn't take it back , the wife might get her feelings hurt.

Your pretty limited as to the bonnets available for it , I do beleive Turtle wax makes a Microfiber bonnet for it . The machine won't be able to do any paint correction but maybe with the right product you may be lighten up some scratches. It will help you apply product evenly over the surface and should speed up the process . Just work the machine back and forth over lapping your work slightly. Good luck and Welcome to the DC !

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback! I will give the polisher try this weekend, it's suppose to be sunny and nice. Where I don't have anything to compare it to, I am sure I will be happy with it...it must be atleast as good as applying it by hand.

I picked up some ColorX and NXT this afternoon....and some NXT Tech Protect and some more bonnets. A kit came with 7 terry cloth bonnets, 2 wax applicators and 2 foam wax removers. My thoughts on use, and I have have no idea, was to pour some ColorX on the applicator bonnet, rub it on the car, change bonnets to a terry cloth, rub more, then remove with the foam. Repeat the same method with the NXT.

The directions on both bottles say to apply to apply a coat to the entire vehicle, let dry, then buff off. Normally, I have been doing a section at a time, then buffing it off. Thoughts?

Once again, thanks everyone! I will definetely post pictures when I am finished this weekend. :dancin

Just a thought. Buff the product off with a microfiber towel , not with the machine . I think you'll find it easier going .

Welcome to DC and Aloha . One quick question. Is the foam bonnets really for wax removal? Most of us use foam to apply polish and wax and microfiber to remove . Also the terry cloth bonnets are probably for removal but like rollman said use a MF towel by hand to remove the wax.

Just another thought maybe the foam bonnet goes underneath the terry bonnet for a cushion . Sorry if I'm confusing you because I really don't know for sure....Good Luck

I agree, sounds weird. Any of the applicators I have used for hand jobs...wait that sounded bad...for applying by hand....have been foam. It says on the package "Foam Wax Remover". I might give it a shot for the fun of it, but I think I will follow your guys advice and use a a terry cloth and remove the wax myself.

Thanks for all the support....great forum!
