gasoline & oxidation

Sort of a detailing question, but wasn't sure where to put it, so here goes...

Yesterday saw a red car (don't even know what it was) that was heavily oxidized - to the point of being more of a pink than red. However, there was one area that was not oxidized at all - looked nice & glossy. It was right below the gas door, in a pattern where it was obvious that gas had been spilled there. Hmmm...

Will gas either (a) prevent oxidation or (b) remove it? I know it's not good on paint, but just found it strange that where gas had been spilled, the paint wasn't oxidized.

b--Gasoline is a good solvent and it removed/cleaned off some of the oxidized paint. You can think of the gas acting much like any regular chemical paint cleaner.

Years ago, some people used kerosene (another fuel form obviously) to clean paint finishes. Also, some detailing products have been known to contain kerosene or other strong solvents, specifically for cleaning paint, and removing oxidation. Therefore, I don't think gas will prevent oxidation, but rather it is just removing some of what is there.

Gas as cleaning is too dangerous it will ignite to easily and the flash point you will have to go to the hospital. The vapors from gas will send you flying and if you are stupid enough to use it in a garage you will get a nice bang out of it.

Cleaning /w gas is a no no!

Gas contains a small amount of oil. After the volatile components evaporate, the oil residue protects the paint from oxidation.

Not only that when the volatile components ignite its a nice charcoal color :grrr
