Garage Wall Paint

Thinking about getting around to painting my garage walls soon here. For those of you that have done this already, what brand and type of paint/primer did you use?

I painted my garage walls four years ago with Valspar Exterior Paint (it was the top of the line, but can't remember exact name) and there was no need for a primer. I wash my car in the garage so the walls get wet from time to time, but it still looks great after 4 years. My cabinets are white and I used a very light grey and it makes the garage very bright.

I'm nornally all about Sherwin paint, but I've got about $150 in gift cards to lowes, so I've been looking at the Valspar Duramax paint

I went with Satin since the semi gloss shows every defect in the wall. Haven't had any problems and it cleans up well.

I used a gliden semi gloss. It was great as shortly after painting I had a can of coke explode. Wiped clean and easy.

My walls are textured same as ceiling and I went gloss finish wipes down so easy nothing really sticks to it and reflect light better.

I like semi for most painting jobs. It doesn't look that shiny on the wall and cleans up nicely. It can depend on what you're painting over. Bare drywall will suck up the shine of even gloss but if you're going over a wall that's been painted several times, semi can even look shinier. A decent quality paint should hold up to some level of scrubbing.

I'm a Sherwin Williams guy. They have an excellant drywall primer and Promar 400 semi gloss for top coat. When I built this house painters refused to use lowes or home Depot paint. If we insisted the price was double because it would take twice the work to achieve enough coats to achieve my wives color. The gift cards are nice but your labor isn't free. Personally I would go to Sherwin Williams and use the gift cards for something else. Ask SW if they have a contractor discount, they will use a painters code that does a large volume and extend that discount to you. My time is valuable, that said I wanna do the least amount of coats. I had my walls and ceilings done in semi-gloss .

I used Olympic exterior semi gloss from Lowes. Mine is 10.5 years old now still looks great. I wipe the walls down about twice a year with APC.Here's one photo of how it started life and how it looks now. I have 2 new rolls of rubber mat that will be installed in the spring.

If you go with SW and can wait they have 30% off sales a few times a year. If you have drywall use a drywall primer, if you have concrete block get a block filler and then go with a high gloss enamel. Tell them what you are doing and they will tell what you need. If you are going over old paint use your da with sand paper to get rid of all those little nubs and other imperfections, it doesn't take that long and you won'the be starring at them every time you walk in the garage.

Alright gents, I need some quick final thoughts. Today is the last day of a Sherwin Williams 40% off paint sale, so I'm going tonight to pick up several gallons of paint (haven't decided on wall colors yet, so I'm going to leave the paint un-tinted for now). I'm pretty well set on using their exterior SuperPaint which comes in Flat, Satin, Gloss, and High Gloss. I'm in the process now of going over the walls with Kilz primer.

The ceiling is going to be white and I'm trying to decided between Flat and Satin. Flat would look the best, but my concern is during the warmer months if I'm working in the garage in the evening I get a ton of gnats, mosquitos, etc....swarming the lights and they always seem to then kinda stick to the ceiling. This also then attracts a few spiders here and there. I'd like to be able to blow/sweep them off the ceiling and I'm worried that if I go a traditional flat ceiling paint they'll stick or mark up the ceiling if I try to clean it up.

Walls will be either Satin or Gloss. I'd much prefer Satin, but the concern is not being able to wipe the walls down good enough or staining them if something splatters. I don't have a drain in the garage, so I don't do heavy spraying or anything.

Final thoughts?
