Garage renovation by GarageTek

Obsessed... who me?
Hi all,

I just had my garage re-done by a company called GarageTek, It's not really what you would call a detailer's garage but it's a good compromise between what I wanted and what my wife could live with. :D

WALLS: all walls were paneled with their Tekpanel. Washable panel that creates grooves throughout all the walls that you can then slot in modular shelves, cabinets, brackets, etc...

CEILING: painted with knockdown paint and then another layer of finishing paint. 6 lights fixtures installed (two strips of 3.) Each fixtures has 2, 4ft. T8 flourescent bulbs. Each bulb is 2200 lumens. Very bright in the garage now.

FLOOR: Interlocking 1x1 tiles. Tiles are about 1" thick. The underside of the tiles are pegged so all tiles allow drainage underneath. The solid topped tiles have circular half-dollar sized bumps that provide texture and grip. The drainage tiles are color matched and perforated on top.

INSTALLATION: for my relatively small 400sq ft. garage, installation took 4 days.

Looks very nice :up

Do you know if they sell their product or only offer the entire install package ?

Wow, that looks really great!

The walls & added lights really brighten it up! "The better to see those flaws"!

Congratulations and many happy hours detailing in it!

maecrispy - I love your garage, I wouldn't mind having one like that. I know you are enjoying it.

:xyxthumbs

We just tore out our Garage-Tek display @ work (EXPO Design Center) here in Nashville because the stuff just wasn't selling. I think it's a great solution, though. Granted it can get a bit expensive for some. If it were a do-it-yourself solution it may have worked better. Congrats and hope you enjoy it. Looks like a quality installation.

Thanks for the compliments all.

Prometheus: Defintiely not cheap. Entire project including all accessories was around $10K. We'll get part of it back if we decide to sell the house and enjoy it in the meantime.

kartoon: AFIK they don't sell the TekPanel material alone. Install only. You can specify any number of walls to be done and any number of accessories. They'll drywall for you if necessary as well.

norahcrv: Definitely! You do see more flaws but nothing beats the halogens for flaw detection. :D

TnM6i: couldn't agree with you more. I originally wanted to find something I could do myself. In the end though, the money wasn't a problem and it's kind of cool that everything I wanted was in one place and install was so quick. Here in southeast MI, GarageTek is doing really well.

Am I reading this right>?! 10K$!!!:scared Is that for the install as well? Man I could build a nise size garage for 10K$

Yup. 10k was for everything including insulation, drywall, paneling, accessories, mudding and painting celing, light fixtures and wiring, flooring system, installation for everything, and painting.

Absolutely beautiful Maecrispy. The paneling system seems like a real functional product with lots of continual improvement built in. I like the detailing supplies and the cabinet. I especially like the bars for towels and mitts. I could use a couple myself.

When you say they are doing well, any ideas on what kind of revenue that equals? Seems like a cool business to own.

I hear that redcar , for 10k not only could we build a nice 24'x24' it could be outfitted with steel cabinety and flooring.

(picking up jaw from floor) holy CRAP! Man, a $10,000 garage make over? Definately awesome, but, wow, $10k? Wow, blows my mind. Maybe im too used to NE mi where it seems only doctors and dentists make 75k+, but man, ten grand for a garage make over seems a little steep. Definately a cool garage though.

SilverLexus: Thanks! Best part of the whole system, IMHO. The modular aspect allows infinite configuration that changes according ot what you need.

SamIam: no idea really. When I say they're doing well, I mean that they're booked solid with no shortage of jobs. My buddy wants to have the same things done for his garage and the earliest slot they can give him is late Oct.

detailbarn, Redcar GUY, Prometheus: I'm not surprised you guys are shocked by the price tag. In the end, it was worth it for us. At the risk of sounding like a snob, the final price was really not a problem for me and my wife. We're DINK's and she earns almost as much as I do so. We value our free time very much and I would rather spend it doing things I like to do (detailing, climbing, improving skills I need for work) than home improvement that I confess I'm not that great at anyway. :D

For me, the extra cost is balanced against the time and effort it would cost me to install everything, the time I would need to learn certain skills (wiring, making sure everything's to code), and the time I would need to correct mistakes that I made. :p

maecrispy ,

don't worry I'm a snob too :D , but really my comment about the cost was not that you spent too much it was more along the lines that what you got wasn't worth what you paid. I agree I would rather spend the money to have someone else do the the work and then reap the benifts. I just like to get my moneys worth.

I do garage organizing as a side gig and have been published in two magazines so I know my way around the garage. For 10k in what looks to be a one car garage this is what you would have gotten from me. Insulated and sheet rocked walls , racedeck flooring or ucoat it epoxy and this cabinet system in your choice of red and black or white and black.

Point is I know the Garage Tek product line to be over priced for what you get , but hey to each their own if it works for you great.

detailbarn: no worries here. Cabinets you show look great! We actually did get a quote from 2 other contractors that would have done something simlar to what you describe rather than what GarageTek did. Labor costs here in AA is very high unfortunately so their quotes were even higher.

Racedeck flooring would definitely have been nice (1 contractor gave quote for it but his quote for everything was too high.) The biggest selling point for the GarageTek system is it's modular nature. Any item (shelves, cabinets, brackets, baskets, lockers, etc...) can be moved to any location on any wall easily and in seconds. That was something my wife was *absolutely* sold on. The other two quotes didn't meature modularity.

Also, the price was for a 2 car garage (23x21 to be exact) and included insulation, drywall, painting, light installation and flooring. In the end, it was competitive with the other 2 contractors for the same work with modularity built in.

Anyway, very cool you've got a little side business re-doing garages. Too bad you're not here in AA! :D
