I had been talking to my wife recently about some tentative plans for the A/V system in my GTO that I wanted to do eventually. So the other night she asks me if I had picked anything out yet and wanted me to share what I had been looking at. Little did I know the sneaky little devil was doing some reconnaissance and took down the info on her phone while I was showing her the video of what the head unit I wanted could do.

Fast forward to yesterday and she has me crack open an amazon box with an early birthday present in it:

Suuuuuper pumped. Ordered all the install stuff I needed last night. Can't wait to put it in!

I've been meaning to do the same with my car but since the A/C digital controls are part of the radio bezel, the dash kit alone costs $189. One of these days I'll bite the bullet...

Yeah, none of it's as easy as it used to be. Back when I started playing with this stuff in high school (late 90's), a simple dash kit and wiring harness and you were on your way. I had to order like 7 or 8 different things just to install this head unit. It'll be worth it though. Bluetooth connectivity with full voice activated everything, Android Auto (looks to be pretty awesome), video, etc....Actually one of my favorite features is the slot for and SD card. Will be nice to have a big SD card loaded up with music in the car all the time.

Ya that unit has a lot of nice features to bring your car into 2015. I think you can mirror your phone on the screen with that receiver.

That is a nice radio. It's the only Nex I believe without navigation. But who needs this when you can use the WAZE app which is free. And it has CarPlay and adriod auto ( firmware update) it's detachable face too I think. I wanted to buy one myself but even at my cost it's still pricey. Got any questions on the install let me know. Be sure to use sub port 1 for Apple products and sub 2 for android products

Enjoy. Pioneer makes great head units. You going to install (I hope) new speakers too? I used to do installs in the 70s and early 80s. Stuff pretty much is still installed the same way. I would go with some sound deadening to really get the best sound. Happy early Birthday!

Yeah, I thought about getting the AVIC-8100 for a bit, but 95% of the time we take any road trips it'll be in our Expedition which has built in Navi. The navigation using my phone/android auto should work perfectly for the rare times I need it in the GTO.

Yes, this particular NEX model is the only one with the detachable face and I shouldn't have to do a firmware update for the android auto to work. I believe it's last year's models that you can do the update on.

Yes, yes, and yes haha.

The pioneer a/v unit that I bought in like 2001 is still going strong in the Dodge Ram that I just sold to my dad and it's still a good unit.

Speakers will eventually get done for sure at some point. The stock ones get sloppy as hell in a hurry as the volume goes up. Just need to decide which direction I wanna go with them.

I've got a good amount of sound deadening left from when I did that Ram that I had, so that will be getting done as well. That stuff make a world of difference.

Yeah, detachable face is the key for me so I could drive anyplace and not worry about it being stolen. The 8100 and 7100 are pretty much identical, but I'll admit the screen is better and crisper on the 8100. You're going to love the 14band Eq and all the other audio control options. Does it come with a bag or container for the face?

Nice! I love Pioneer head units. Every vehicle I have owned has had a Pioneer unit it in. They are kind of pointless with GPS though. I have had my newest one for around 3 years and I can't say I have ever used the GPS.

How do you guys like the Bluetooth on an aftermarket receiver? I was going back and forth between two JVC models recently and the only difference was the Bluetooth.

I can't speak to aftermarket head units yet, but both of my wife's last two vehicles have had ford's sync system and I wouldn't get a unit without Bluetooth after having it

I bought an inexpensive JVC head unit about 5 years ago to install in my 1993 Cadillac Deville and the Bluetooth works great. No problem syncing with my last three iPhones.

If you're using it to revive and answer calls its all about placement of the microphone. If just streaming music they all work well. Pioneer and kenwood make good Bluetooth mics and are small ( jvc and kenwood same company now) kenwood sound quality is a bit better then they make an excelon and that's has an even better sound without breaking the bank like pioneer
