For those who love multiple wax coats

Greetings all,

I have a question (well, actually several) for all you multi-layer zealots.

1. After you apply the first coat of wax/sealant and let it cure for 10-15 hours, do you do any prep prior to adding the next coat? (Washing, QD, etc or just go for it)

2. I have a preference to stick with as many OTC products as I can, despite everyone's support for boutiques. I am cheap. That said, what are your comments about my LSP layering plan (note - I am lazy, you'll soon see why):

a) NXT 1.0 as base, OCW as topper

b) NXT 1.0 as base, DGAW as topper

c) DGAW as base, OCW as topper

d) DGAW as base, eagle one nanowax as topper

e) NXT 1.0 as base, NXT 1.0 as second layer

Note - my car is metallic grey and I'll probably buy some NXT 2.0 once I run out of 1.0, unless I decide to go only use WOWO products out of sheer laziness (ie DGAW and OCW and maybe Z8 if I win the lottery).

:spot

As far as letting a sealant glaze cure overnight (I use KSG), I just go ahead and apply the next coat.

For layering of OTC waxes, I think that's going to be a little bit more difficult as most of the OTC waxes that I know of will have varying levels of cleaners in them, rendering layering useless because you will be taking away some of your previous product.

Hope that helps.

i use mothers carnauba wax ontop of their sealant. my car is ivory pearl, and it comes out ok, but i want to try something else myself !!!:spot

I'd worry more about properly polishing the paint than layering.

Assuming you've properly polished the paint and you want to be cheap, just keep applying OCW with every wash. Fast, easy and looks great.

NXT cannot be layered because it does have cleaners it in. However two coats will give you better results probably (better coverage).

No matter what your base go with two coats.

I used to use Megs #21 (solid 2 months of water beading) and at the time a lot of guys on MOL where using NXT as a topper for #21. I tried that and found the paint dead in 3 weeks. NXT cleaned off the #21 and ruined it...

My point is that a building is only as strong as the foundation, so NXT will limit the durabilty of anything on top because it just doesn't last.

Yes generally if you're topping you put the beauty wax on top. I myself just get the finish how I like by polishing then go with the tried and true durability of collinite. Then I only have to worry about getting the first coat right. Can't go wrong with applying a thick haze of it letting that bake in the sun for about 20 minutes and then buffing it off. Then I know I've got some extreme protection in only one layer.

The car is well polished and has minimal swirls. The only imperfections are ones I can't get out (ie chips :().

What do you all think of the durability of:

NXT vs OCW

NXT vs DGAW

I've got a sneaking suspicion that both, or at least DGAW lasts longer and both are clearly much easier to apply.

Do consider NXT 2.0 over the original as it looks better and the durability is as good or better than the original #21. As to looks, the NXT 2.0 version provides a really nice carnauba look. That is, it slightly darkens the appearance like #26 does. Apply two coats 12 hours apart and you are good to go for months.

I should've written 2.0... but everything you wrote is 100% bang on! Nice post.

OCW lasts longer than DGAW (I've used both) and has a more carnauba look vs the sealant look of DGAW. NXT2 is more durable than the original. Just use it as your base (2 layers for complete coverage) then just top regularly with the spray wax of your choice. Don't overthink layering, keep it simple and don't expect much more than a car that looks freshly waxed all the time...because that is what you are doing. ;)

Complete coverage for me is always an issue! With liquid wax, I always forget to buff in some little area and with spray wax, i call it "overspray" wax and use up 1/3 of a bottle per car!

If I put 2 coats on initially for coverage and wait 12 hr in between for curing, should I QD or rewash for dust issues prior to the second coat or is that not a worry? (The car would be sitting in the garage)

Try spraying the spray wax on an applicator pad first. You won't lose so much of it into thin air.

Once you have gone that far you might as well just use liquid wax instead of spray. Hence why I don't use spay wax.

I'd rewash. I always get the best results actually washing the car vs just using a QD. Just put the two layers one right after the other for complete coverage, then next time you wash, apply another.

When using a spray wax, work in small areas, like 1/4th of the hood, etc.

Two coats of NXT (12 hours apart) and if you want to maintain it and ensure long term durability, weekly use of UQD or NXT Spray Wax.

Wouldn't the second coat of NXT just remove the first coat?
