Foamed wool pads rock

I've been having troubles with, for lack of a better term, "Polish Gap". In order to get any correcting done on my car, I've had to get pretty aggressive, and it left me with some pretty good haze and compounding swirls. Stuff that was too much for PO106FF or even IP on an orange pad to get out. So I just polished my car with the 106ff the best I could, and have lived with the swirls and haze.

Then I got a couple purple foamed wool pads. Today I grabbed the IP and a foamed wool pad and got to work. Not only did the swirls, polishing haze, and pretty much every other defect come out of my Really Freaking Hard Clear Coat (RFHCC. please update secret decoder ring :) ), but it finished down LSP ready. I went ahead and went over the car with a green pad and 6ff, but I really didn't see much of an improvement. Foamed wool is really great stuff for hard clears with light/moderate defects.

The foamed wool was a joy to use. Didn't gum up too bad (nylon brush is the ticket), didn't leave wool all over my car, and was very easy to use. Cut was quick and easy. Broke down the polish quick, too.

UPS paid me a visit, too. Dropped off the Vintage and HD-Cleanse. I'm gonna take a break and take my kid to see Shrek III, then I'm gonna finish off the car with the first coat of Vintage. It'll be too late for pictures, but I'll try and have some good sun shots tomorrow. I'll also post a few pics of the Vintage container and certificates.

Did you inspect the finish in direct sunlight after the wool. I have seen many cars look great in the garage after wool polishing, but in sunlight they where hologrammed heavily.

Interesting to hear - I'm a big wool fan and I'm always looking for a better cut -> finish ratio.

P.S. that Vintage sounds like a better and better idea every time I think of it... you've got a PM about it.

I got them from autogeek. The picture there shows that they come in many different sizes, but I could only find the 6.5" ones in stock. Love that 6.5" size, btw... much easier to work with than the 7.5's and larger.

There were a few places I could see some holograms under the halogens. It seems that the ticket to not getting the holograms was working the polish longer. Making sure it was broken all the way down really seemed to eliminate the holograms. At least, i think it did... I'll fiind out when i get a good look at it in the sun tomorrow. Of course, I did do 106ff afterwards, so I'm hoping that took care of whatever was left.

Really can't say enough good things about those purple foamed pads. Makes even a rookie like me look good. :)

The info at autogeek says that the pads are good for removing 1500 grit swirls, so I imagine you could really get jiggy with them and some higher cut stuff for aggressive correction. These things might well replace yellow and orange foam pads.

I'll be getting my foamed wool pads from TOTL on monday;) I can't wait to try it out on my car. I've been so busy with taking care of everyone else's car that I have neglected my own. But next weekend me and my car have a date, hopefully I can get my HTEC by then too.

I wish you could have taken before and after shots so we could see what these things can do. I'll be taking pics of my process but my car is white so i'm sure it'll be pretty hard to tell.

Crap, I really should have done this... even some after IP and before 6ff, then after 6ff shots would have shown how well they really did finish down.

I'll remember before I do the wife's Sequoia, which I plan on doing just as soon as the feeling comes back into my arms.

After hearing your review, I'm extremely anxious to get busy on my car. I just got my OP today, gonna be ordering some HTEC and quite a few products from CG, including 50/50, tomorrow. If all goes as planned, I'm thinking to attack my car like this:

Wash w/NXT

Clay

Rotary/foamed wool/OP

PC/green/OP

PC/red/DG105

50/50 by hand

JW CJ by hand

This should have my white Monte Carlo glowing and dripping!!!

I just did a Merc with 6.5 foamed wool pads and it left crazy haze and buffer swirls on hard black mercedes maint. Of course I was using HT-EC with it but I dont think its very possible to correclty go from wool to lsp no matter what polish you are using with it

Menzerna Intensive Polish is (as you know) much less aggressive than HTEC. The finish the foamed wool leaves behind is directly proportional to the aggressiveness of the polish you used. I can tell you that it IS possible to go from wool to lsp, cause I've done it... Well, actually I did end up going over the car with green/6ff, but that was just to see if I could get any additional improvement. I did not; the car still looked just like it did after the wool (minus a very few holograms which I could have prevented by working the polish longer).

I'd imagine even a white foam finishing pad would leave behind a hazed, swirled up mess if you used HTEC with it. I know it will with Menzerna Power Gloss, cause I've done it. : /

Every time I've used a wool pad (even a polishing wool) on a dark colored Mercedes, I regreted it deeply. I'm now able to fully correct them with a cutting foam pad with the proper polish instead of using wool. :woot2: That's a specific vehicle that is ultra sensitive to proper buffing techniques also. Going from a wool to a LSP would be impossible IMO.

David, will you please write the Dam book! How many people in the world would have known what you just tossed forward?

What you just said above would lead me to ask a dozen more question, witch will probably follow from others!! Give it some serious thought !

Have you ever tried the LC foamed wool pads w/IP on a dark colored benz with the proper technique?

Yes - I've used their foamed wool on my black E-class and and never had good results with it. I've also used it on several other MBs for spot buffing bad areas. I'm not knocking the pad, I'm just stating that it's overkill for this type of paint. I love using wool pads and usually reach for them 1st on most projects, but I learned my lessons on MBs.

Just a bit OT... do any of the wool pads you guys use "shed" during use and/or washing?

I got a wool pad with my makita, and while I'm sure it's not of great quality, I gave it a try on my practice car... worked good but strands were flying all over the place and when I went to wash it off later I had a hand full of wool...

I'm looking into purchasing the foamed wool pad and some lambs pads as well in the near future, but I don't want to go through the same issues...

All wool pads shed. Try spurring them really good the before using them and it knocks it down a little. The shedding won't last forever. Just be patient.
