foam or terry for SMR?

Many go with foam. It lets you apply fairly even pressure across a uniform applicator pad.

A few go with terry because of its extra punch, but it may leave some hazing due to the highs and lows of a terry applicator.

It also depends on the finish conditon, terry with SMR, then follow up with foam on a decent finish, foam and SMR on a good finish.

Also be prepared to have a good workout rubbing and rubbing with 3M SMR. Its a PIA to apply by hand to a car.

I generally use cotton terry apps with abrasives or cleaners and foam for sealants or waxes.

Jason is correct, 3M abrasives require a LOT of work when done by hand, but it can be done... In my mind, I don't believe foam apps have enough of a cutting action when using them with an abrasive or cleaner, and they can't absorb grit or dirt particles that may be removed during polishing...

So if I am doing a car where the 3M SMR/CMA yellow pad is not enough I could use FI II/terry bonnet first?

Another way- terry is more agressive than yellow foam?

Where does the CMA wool pad fit in to the agressiveness spectrum in comparison to the terry bonnet and the yellow foam pad?

Thanks for any input,

Robert

If the yellow pad and 3M FI II are not working, try 3M FI II with the lambswool polishing pad. Teh lambswool pad would be a step up from the yello cutting foam.

I only use the terry on beater cars because its really really rough, it has its uses for the beater cars and cleaner waxes though.
