Foam Gun Question

For those of you who use a foam gun (the hose type - not pressure washer type) what is the actual procedure that I should use?

Do I simply foam up the entire car, rise the entire car and then wash normally?

Or

Do I foam the entire car and then wash the entire car using the foam that has been sprayed on the car?

I'm thinking probably option 1 since that would allow most of the dirt to rise away with the foam...

What I do is foam, rinse, foam, wash with 2bm (using both the bucket and the soap on the car). The hose type of foam gun just doesn't leave enough soap on the car (compared to a foam cannon) and I don't feel comfortable washing without the 2bm. Perhaps it is fine, but as a newbie I like to be extra careful.

Oh man I gotta rewrite my wash technique post/article some time :o

VERY short version:

-Gallon jug- six oz. shampoo, rest water. Fill foamgun with that

-I work one panel, or a fraction of a panel, at a time

-I presoak with a sorta-strong mix (next-to-strongest setting. "no holes showing on the right"), let it dwell for a minute or two

-Using BHB at "one hole showing on the right" setting, I spray the foamgun at the point where the bristles touch the paint and "jiggle" the BHB across the panel

-Rinse, inspect, repeat if obviously still dirty

-Rewash at "one or two holes showing on the right" setting with the same method except using a mitt (shampoo-filled, held shut at cuff), still spraying foamgun output at point of contact with paint

-Rinse, inspect, repeat as needed

The idea, which I think you already get, is "dislodge and flush". This works a *LOT* better with the BHB thanwith the mitt because the miss retains dirt more. Gotta rinse the mitt out very frequently (I sure never do a whole panel without rinsing!), but the BHB will pretty much "self rinse" via the foamgun output.

Yeah, I go through a lot of water and shampoo mix that way, but I went over two years (including winters) on a Carbon Metallic Yukon XLD without any marring to speak of and I basically don't have to do correction any more.
