Foam Applicators - Are all brands equal?

Hi all-

I've never been a foam applicator user. The majority of products I've used in the past worked fine with a MF applicator. I now have some products that I've read would work best with foam applicators so I decided to pick some up. Since the Meguiars Gold Class Foam Applicators seem to be the favorite around here I thought I'd buy them. I've read some threads stating that they are getting increasingly difficult to find but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. So after:

1 Target

1 Meijer

1 NAPA

1 PepBoys

1 O'Reilly's

1 Advanced Auto Parts

1 Wal-Mart

and 2 AutoZones

I ended up with a whopping total of ZERO Meguiars brand foam applicators. I did end up buying a couple made by Turtle Wax. So is their a difference in foam applicators? If you are one of the Autopians that prefers the Meguiars GC applicators please explain why. Any other brands that you like over others?

Mike

Well now that would be to easy and would ruin the information I hope to gather from this thread. But the thought did cross my mind. :chuckle:

they are all the same. I like the turtle wax ones alot. Where did you get them? i cant find foam pads anywhere?

Jim

Me neither! Can't find them anywhere but online.

And online they're like... $1 each not even including shipping?! :grrr

all the same stuff...ebay has a good deal every now and again...there is always someone new selling them in bulk...just picked up a dozen for 10 bucks shipped...

It has been my experience that they are not all the same. Some are larger and some are smaller, some are single ply, and some are double ply, some are harder and some are softer. I like the Megs ones because they are double ply and softer then the "cheapo" ones. They are also a little bit larger around (4") so they're easier for larger hands to hold onto without getting cramps. Megs makes both 4" and 6" foam pads for hand use that are both double ply and thicker then some others out there. I got my 6" pads from their web site but I was able to find a bunch of the 4" ones at our local Walmart. The 6" pad is just a larger version of their yellow 4" and if I remember correctly it was somewhat hard to find on their web site (like listed with the RV stuff or something).

You can go to walmart and by the 3 pack of pads, and one of them is foam. I have done that, because I really like the MF ones to, and use the 3rd pad (white) for the interiors.

I've noticed the Meguiars pads have writing embossed into one side (at least in the pictures I've seen). Does this affect the ability to use both sides of the applicator?

No. I usually only use one side anyway and that helps me to keep up with which side Ive used and which side my hand has been on. :chuckle:

I just picked up a 2 from pinnicalewax.com for $2.51 (after discount). It was cheaper for me to get them there then driving my mustang around town looking for some foam pads @2.79 for gas. Figure the 12 pack is $11.xx for 12 pads plus shipping. Sucks to pay shipping but so does driving to 9 diffent stores. That and Pinnacle Sig II is on sale for $20 I couldn't pass that up.

Foam is foam. All of them are 100% the same.

Not true, being in the foam industry for many years I can say it is not all the same !

Cheap foam are loaded with tactum powder and other impurties which can scratch or marr the paint.

I use to think that foam is foam

till I switched over to CG's Dura Foam applicators.

I wouldn't use anything else since.

very nice and thick and sooo soft, not to mention the price is a steal for them.

just something else to consider
