Florida here I come.

Update

With spring being here now and I am getting so busy I have just decided to stay here till the winter.

All my clients teamed up and talked me into staying up here in mass. .:nixweiss

I will probably take a vacation in the summer and go down and visit.

Thanks

Ryan

Not sure yet Pat. I am trying to figure out what part would be decent.

I have a few more cars that I have to do up here so it will be in a few weeks. I do want to go down there to check things out just to make sure it is what I want and stay consistant with work.

WEST PALM BEACH / PALM BEACH GARDENS. Eighty year old lady's tooling around in Bentley's.

edit: boss I don't blame you for leaving the ****** northeast. The weather up here is horrible, the people are cold and rude, and the roads are laughable.

West Palm is a nice area, where I'm originally from. Lots of expensive cars, but lots of already established detailers. VERY tough competition there. Might wanna check out the west coast, Sarasota/Naples are both pretty affluent areas, but you can move there pretty cheap. Not as many super high end cars, but still plenty of Jags, BMWs, Mercs, etc. and it'd be a lot easier to break into the market.

Just the word beach, puts a smile on my face.

Your right, living up here is very depressing, especially when it gets under 40. The roads are very bad up here and it is impossible to have a nice car up here.

Let me add a FL welcome. I winter in Cape Coral just a few miles from Naples. Great area and warm. It's about 80° today and I spent too much time in the pool today, LOL.

The economy is bad but homes are now selling quite quickly. You can buy a brand new 3/2 home w/attached 2 car garage as low as $60k in some areas. There are some homes partially built that can be had for cheap if you are able to finish the interior. Several builders went out of business and had spec homes that were never completed.

The area is full of snowbirds (like myself) every year. This brings a lot of cash into the local economy. Housing is cheap. Food is as well. I've not found many good detailers in the area. I have found a lot of great vehicles in need of detailing. I see a lot of more exotic cars in Naples but housing prices are still high there. There is also a market for detailing boats in this area.

Your clothing budget can be cut in half here too as t-shirts and shorts are the year round uniform.

Google Cape Coral and you can come up with a good flavor of the area. It is a city of canals. I live on a canal and can get to the gulf in about 20 minutes from my dock. Fishing is great.

Weather... You really need to get this far south in FL to have the warm winter weather. Tampa usually runs 10° cooler than Cape Coral.

Boca Raton...its pretty wealthy down there...

I'm in the same boat though! I just got laid off from the day job and now is my chance to move west or south. It's kind of a blessing in a way since I always talked about warm weather and beaches!

One thing to take into consideration, if you don't know the area, the first couple months will be rough getting some business. No one had heard about you but I'm sure you'll have no problem!

goodluck with your endeavors!

Thanks for the info Jim. 80 sounds nice as it is only 30 here in the bright sun. I just know the summers down there are very hot and I will have to get used to it. The warm winters will be a pleasure.

I heard how bad it is there with the houses and I have a few friends that purchased winter homes down there at very low prices.

We still are every now and then. I have been doing jobs at clients houses lately due to bad weather and them not wanting to drive their cars during this messy season.

Haha, I was just telling someone that I hated doing boats. I will still look into it just to make sure all my bases are covered and work is there.

Thanks for the heads-up info! People are spending money for sure. Last year in MA, I have seen more and more Ferraris, Lambo's, Ford Gt's, etc. crusing the streets and at car shows. I have become very good personal friends with some of them and hanging out with them for a day, you would never know it was a bad economy.

I am just hoping that FL will be the same way.

Cape Coral is a pretty depressing place in parts. North Cape Coral is a hellhole, Lehigh Acres is a ticking time bomb. The issue with the less expensive areas of Cape Coral and Lehigh is a huge amount of illegal immigrants, who are increasingly out of work and turning to crime. My gf's mom lives in Cape Coral still, in what used to be a pretty average part of town. As the home prices have dropped, so has the quality of the neighborhood. Her neighborhood has gotten pretty bad, with break-ins just a few blocks down from her.

I'd move to Estero/Bonita Springs area if you're going for SWFL. Overall a more affluent area, but still cheaper housing. There's the university between Alico Road and Corkscrew road too, and so that it makes that area substantially younger. Plus Estero and Bonita are situated in between Fort Myers and Naples, making for a decent commute to either area. Great shopping too, Coconut Pointe is very nice, Gulf Coast Town center is OK, and the Coastland Mall is very nice.

Be prepared for the fact that everything not cheap will be super expensive. Going out, etc. is crazy expensive in that area, luckily wages are better.

Jacksonville has some decent areas, but it might be a bit colder than you'd want. Just avoid the center of the state and you should be fine. Anywhere not on a coast is bad.

LOL! Greetings from Central Florida! Sadly, I have to agree with XRL. Go to the coasts. I prefer the Gulf, but it's easy to check it all out before making a decision.

Lots of Autopians here, Rydawg. Give us a shout when you arrive. Good excuse for a meet.

Jacksonville is a larger city than most people think. Most detailers are hacks here and there are lots of golf courses, a pro football team, and some plenty of nice cars with swirls. the beaches are decent but yeah it still gets cold and it's oh so frickin hot in August. and yeah there's this statistic about being the murder capital in the US.

good luck with the move!
