Flexible backing plate?

What backing plate should I buy? I'm confused about those yellow flexible backing plates sold buy CMA, for use with DA polishers. What are the advantages to these type of backing plates? Should I buy one of those to use on a BMW? Or would the backing plate that comes with the PC 7424 bonus kit from Coastal Tool work fine?
 
One thing that often seems to get overlooked is the combination of pad size and backing plate size.



The backing plate with that kit is 6", so when used with a 6.5" pad the edge of the plate is near the edge of the pad.



The flex plate you mentioned is either 5" or 6". Personally I would purchase a 5" one if you are using 6.5" pads. That way the edge of the backing plate is well away from the edge of the pad.



If you are going to use 7.5" pads then use a 6" packing plate.
 
What is the advantage of having the edge of the backing plate futher away from the edge of the pad? Is this just a saftey precaution? Also who sells the best polishing pads?

Totally agree with tnoy66 - the further the backing plate is from the edge of the pad, then the less chance of hitting it against your paintwork.



As for pads, Meguiars pads are a safe bet - but also the LC pads from the Autopia shop, CMA and Detailers Paradise are popular choices. I could be wrong, but I think the CMA and Detailers Paradise pads are both made by LC, just with a different name on the bag.
