Flaking Aluminum

Afternoon everybody,

I have been reading on this site for some time now and haven't been able to post anything that might help someone else. Everyone here knows waaaay more about this stuff than me. I did just get my order of Klasse though so maybe I can post some results to help someone in the future.

Anyway, I have a set of aluminum rims that need either restoring or a tombstone. The metal is flaking off and looks pretty bad, can they be saved by me or is it time to take them to a shop? I read about using aircraft strength stipper to remove the finish, but I'm pretty sure there is no finish left on these guys.

Any ideas are much appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to Autopia.

First off, aluminum doesn't flake. Without a pic I can't tell what is happening but only something that coats the wheels will flake. Is it chrome plating? Is it a clearcoat? Is it paint?

Are these factory wheels or aftermarket?

I imagine the salt residue from winter roads caused this. Jngrbrdman had a similar problem. Do a search for his posts (and pics) to see if your problem is the same.

Thanks for the replies gents, I'll try to get a pic of the wheels for the weekend. I'm pretty sure they are facoryt rims (Ford Bronco II) and from the sounds of things I guess it would be the clea coat that is flaking off. Salt from the winters around here could definitely have something to do with it. The truck also spent two winters in Moscow (yep, Russia) and who knows what they throw on the roads out there.

I guess the best idea is get some pictures, I'll try to post them on the weekend.

Thanks for welcoming me to the forum, first posts are always a little unnerving.
