FK 1000P & FK Pink wax question

Hello,

I would appreciate if you could provide me with your thoughts. I'm planning to apply 1 coat FK1000P which is ysnthetic wax and topped with Pink wax which is Carnauba wax. Is that a good approach and if not what wax you're recommend to be used as a toper for FK100P.

Thanks to all for your help.

Natural over sealant is a good approach if you want to layer on a carnauba. Typically sealants don't bond well on top of a carnauba. Give it a try, I'm sure they'll be a good pair.

If you want to top the FK1000P then using their Pink Wax, which was designed to go over FK1000P without issues, would probably be a good choice.

BUT, as a big fan of FK1000P, I wouldn't want to top it with anything unless I simply couldn't live with how it looked (by itself) on a particular vehicle. And even then I'd think long and hard about it, and I'd try living with just the FK1000P for a while to see if I could get used to that look.

IMO the appearance diffs from topping a good sealant don't compare with the downsides, including the inability to layer on more sealant later.

Oh, and Welcome to Autopia!

I personally am not fond of PW , it really never did nothing for me.

1000P on the other hand was just suggested to me the other day by Accumulator on I did 2 coats on the hood of my 4Runner and 1 coat on the rest. Its been a while since I've used it and holy cow it makes me want to "not trade it in". The results are stunning. I could not see topping it with anything else personally . just my .02.

If I was not busy today I would apply a 2nd or 3rd coat to the rest of the vehicle.

I guess I am back to being hooked on the thick deep look of 1000P . thanks Accumulator .....lol.

It’s just my two cents but I would be afraid of losing some of those neat traits (resistance to contaminant adhesion, etc.) that make me put up with the application process of FK1000P. ….not to mention possible issues with the application of an additional coat(s) down the road if I felt the need to (as mentioned). I guess I just don't like messin' with a good thing. ;)

How long do you let FK1000 "set" before buffing off?

Should I layer it?

What is the ideal cure time before another layer should be applied?

I am trying to protect a vehicle that will have to live in the weather 24/7. Mid-west weather year around...the customer ran out of garage space and asked for the best long term protection I could provide.

I have prepped the finish well and given it a double IPA wipe.

I was thinking of two layers of 1000 followed by a two layers of Ultima PGP sealant.

Any advice would be handy and much appreciated I will be returning the vehicle tomorrow night.

Pink wax will darken the paint. Not popular anymore, but very good looking wax. Smells bad though.

Knucklebuckett - layer it or just get FK1 #2180 as the base - work it into the paint and top it with #1000

What about Opti-Coat? Premium price, but definitely an outdoor car solution.

I'm on the wait and see plan with Opti-Coat. I'm a firm believer in using an expendable coating that has to be renewed.

Until it passes the finger-swipe test, wiping off cleanly.

Should I layer it?

Yes, BUT..

This is the kicker- if you get a solvent action you'll end up with pseudo-holograms, and I've had that happen even after waiting a few days. So I let each coat cure for at least a week before layering on the next one. OK, that's not always feasible and you do want to get more than one coat on, so at least try to be *very* gentle about applying the subsequent coats.

I have no idea how the PGP will bond to the FK, but I'd suspect "not well". I'd just do one or the other.

….just to add to Accumulator’s points regarding layering, in my limited experience with FK1000P I did notice a difference in the characteristics and durability of FK1000P between the panels where I used 1 vs 2 applications of the product (don’t know of any benefit beyond that). I waited a week before applying the 2nd coat though simply to avoid the pseudo-halogram issue Accumulator mentioned. It’s never happened to me personally but I have no desire to find out the hard way.

btw, I wouldn't see a need to top FK1000P with something like UPGP to be honest. I would use one or the other as mentioned. Having said that, I have used OS over aging LSP's (even FK1000P).

I applied FK1000P after I Klasse AIO. The result was very impressive ob Black BMW 2008. FK1000P went very easy on/off.

However, one thing I noticed when I took the car outside the garage it was some pseudo-halgram and I'm not sure how can I get rid of it. Any advice would be appreciated.

I applied 3 coats of 1000p to our CR-V last October. I emailed FK1000p and asked them about how much time to allow the sealant to cure before applying the second coat. They suggested 24 hours. I think I waited 20 hours. I applied the third coat after the next wash. I was very pleased with both the look and the durability of the sealant.

I got rid of mine by buffing with a plush MF dampened with FK425. In some areas I had to spritz on plenty of FK425 and also fog the surface with my breath. And in a few areas I had to buff a lot harder than I wanted to (luckily no marring resulted).

Make sure the surface is 100% clean before you try that, lest you rub some dirt into the paint.
