Fix for etched chrome trim

Does anyone know a fix for chrome trim on a 07 jag xj? It was etched by one of our fabulous local tunnel wash/ swirl-o-matics. Any help on this would be great. I service a local Jag.LR/Volvo dealer and they get about 4 of these a week, so far everything ive thrown at it does nothing.:buffing:

Ideas? Thanks

Sorry No pictures yet... Its "cloudy" these are newer vehicles and the dlrship claims that Volvo actually investigated because so many were being replaced. One of the local swirl-o-matics is using why to high a concentration or someting and the chrome looses all its shine... Still silver but kind of an uneven matte instead of shiney and bright.

how permanent of a repair is that? Not familiar with SEM aresols

A couple years depending on:

1. Quality of repair. Cleaning is critical.

2. Weather. Heat accelerates the breakdown of coatings.

The repair will be undetectable, but will need to be repeated every few years.

It's not a perfect fix, but consider the alternatives:

1. Replace the trim. $500 - $1000?

2. Live with the cloudy, hazed, etched trim. $0.

A biyearly $50 clearcoat should be easy to sell to the customer.

Sounds like someone went over it with a rotary..... I've seen chrome get cloudy and dull after a rotary has buffed over it. It should always be taped off when such tools are being used.

You might try some 0000 Steal Wool and after that use a good abrasive chemical like Blue Magic Metal Polish. Try the metal polish first and if it doesn't work, then go with the very fine steal wool and back to the polish after.

make sure it it real chrome

and not chromed plastic before you do that

THat is my hesitation.... i dont think they are putting ANY real chrome pkgs on these days.. at least not on cars under $100,000 its like electroplated plastic.... the fit and trim on even the high line cars is really getting pathetic!!!!

I worked on a volvo s80 today that had cheeper plastic than some KIA's ive seen... Oh well...

Ill try some of that clear coat.... would spraying a regular acrylic clear be the same or better... if im going to tape off I could just hit it with the sata (WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TOO THAT IM CLEAR COATING CHROME??)
