First of all hi and a problem with my new car's paint.

Hi I am a detailer and I am lurking around here for a while now, but I never posted...

Anyway I got my new car, a BMW E60 5 series 535d in carbon black. My dealer decided to install some swirl marks all over the rear trunk and spoiler (and probably on other places too).

I think they just wiped the dirty car with a towel or something, because I went back and they saw it obviously. They then told me they had some "stuff" that will make it look like new again.

Well, I was a bit sceptic about this, but the scratches are really fine. What's the best way to handle this problem without making the paint dull or damage it more?

I have Megiuars Swirl Free Polish, but I am not sure if it is too strong (cut level 3). Maybe something like Zaino Z5

Here are pics of the car. I had a silver car before so it's really a much harder color to maintain.

DutchDetailer- Welcome to Autopia! Sorry to hear your new Bimmer got scratched.

You'll need something abrasive to truly remove the marring. Z5 is a nonabrasive filler, so that won't do it. The #82/Swirl-Free might do it, but it's pretty mild. Give it a try, it's certainly not *too* abrasive, quite possibly it won't even be aggressive enough. Be sure to only use this product (and do any other touching of the vehicle) with very soft foam and microfiber. It's very easy to mar automotive paint and as you're finding out, black shows everything.

I agree with Accumulator, try the #82 with a PC and polishing pad. If that doesn't work, you can move up to #80 only on the spots that are scratched and then go over the whole car again with #82 and then protect.

By the way, this is off topic, but what does the "d" stand for behind 535? Here, in the states we have an "i".

DutchDetailer, Welcome to the big A ! :welcome

Nice beemer!! Keep us updated on your attempt to remove the swirls/scratches.

First off I just want to say how muchj I love that car, absolutely beautiful! I agree with using the Megs #80 to remove the light swirls. As for regular polish and wax you have to love the look of VM and CMW, or Souveran of course. Wolfgang sealant also looks great on black and can be topped easily.

That car looks 1000x better with those wheels. The larger wheels completely change the stance - Very sharp!!

They look like the new m5 wheels, are they an option?

Not going to add anything new on products, as Accumulator/JDookie covered that. But I do feel obligated to tell you BMW's carbon black is without question the nicest paint color I've ever seen. :bow Excellent choice! :xyxthumbs

sorry but i HAVE to second that motion. :bounce

Jason and Navindra,

Diesels are not for trucks only, here in Europe. The 535d is one of the most amazing oil burners of all times. It is a relatively small, 3 liter inline six, with two sequential turbos. It has 272 EU hp, but the torque is insane: 413 lb. ft. From 0 to 62 mph it gets a healthy 6.8 sec. AND... that's with 36 mpg in average, with soot filter and Euro 4 emissions rating. :bigups

Thanks for the kind replies, much appreciated.

@L33 : The wheels come with the M5 sport package I have.

@JDookie : #82 & #80 which products (brand especially) are you referring to?

Also, I was filling up the car last night and I saw under the bright light at the station that basically the whole car is covered with swirls. Like I said, I think they just wiped it while dirty.

There's some fat substance on the side spoilers too, could that be cosmoline? :shocked

Dealer did a very louzy job

Hmmm, a detailer who buys a 530d. May be it pays more to be a detailer than I thought. Or may be in Netherlands it pays more :D A good choice of car. Not sure about your choice of color though. I have said many times, I am not getting another black car. I love the way it looks after detailing, but it is so easy to scratch  I've seen brand new M3s & 740s sitting at dealers lots covered in swirl marks. The dealers are such idiots, they ruin the paint work as soon as they lay their hands on it. :angry Anyhow good luck with the swirl marks, I have had the same problem with my car. After using the PC 7424 I've been getting much better results. But I still hate looking at my car under the strong lights of the gas stations (but right after detailing and several layers of wax, the swirls are much less visible). I am also being very careful not to put anymore swirls... I'd not let the dealers touch it anymore. I never let them wash the car when I take it in for service either. I tell them "do not even breathe near the car". Just keep off after changing the oil and oil filter.

It's a 535d, not a 530d :p

Detailing is a hobby of mine, and I love the colour, even though I agree it's very difficult to maintain.

I've had a silver E46 m3 before this and no swirl problems whatsoever, at least not noticeable.
