First full detail with a porter cable.......and some questions

Ok so i just got my pc in yesterday and went ahead and detailed my car with it for the first time.Everything went fine and the pc was not that hard to get a hang of.However i think i could have used a few extra m/f towels.Other than that the detail went great for me and the car is shining like never before.

One problem i had was that my #9 meguiars swirl remover did not seem to cut it.I pushed up the speed of my pc and it still just didnt seem like it was working.Overall i think i got rid of some small swirls but not many.

Besides that it seems that i may have caused more swirls with my meguiars claybar or my new natural sea sponge.I think it may have been the claybar though, since i have never used it before.I was sure to keep the surface very wet but afterward it seemed that i added to the swirls but the finish was very smooth.

So basically im happy with the results of the pc.But i think i may need somthing a bit stronger to get rid of these swirls.Im open to suggestions as i dont know what i really need. Also could my claybar have caused more swirls than i started with? Thanks for any and all help, and sorry for the essay but i couldnt explain all this in less words.

From what I have read #9 is designed for rotary use, I have had better results with #82 Swirl Free or #80 Speed Glaze by PC. If these dont cut it you would be advised to look at DCAP, Poorboys SSR 2.5 to name a couple.

creep3,

First, :welcome to Autopia!

Okay, I have a couple questions. What speed were using when you say you *pushed* it up a little? What pads are you using with your PC? How big of an area were you polishing at a time, and for how long?

Clay question now, what were you using to wet the surface? How much pressure were you using? Did you knead it as it became dirty?

Let's start with these and see if we can get you headed in the right direction. :xyxthumbs

Oh, and Meg's #9 Swirl Remover is misleadingly named. It isn't strong enough to remove swirls. You'll need something stronger, such as #80 Speed Glaze or #83 DACP.

Hey thanks for the help and im glad to be here.

I started out my pc at 4 and pushed it up to 5 1/2 power wise. Now i have never used one and didnt really know what speed to work with.As for the area i was working with i started with half of my hood. And i kept at it maybe a few mins. off and on.

As for the clay i used megiuars quick detail clay and detail spray.I kept the area i was working with very wet.And i did not really even use much pressure. The clay did not get very dirty at all but i did knead it.

Claybar can certainly scratch your paint if you don't switch to the clean side very often. But it's the process that follows by polishing and waxing anyway. I find the speed that works best for PC is around 4-5. That's it. I don't wanna go beyond that. Anything exceeds that speed, you ought to break out rotary.

When you are correcting paint with a PC, you need to run it at 5 or 6 but go real slow, maybe 1/2 to 1" per second over the area. You will probably get better results with Meguiars #80, Poorboy's SSR2.5 or Optimum Polish than you will from #9.

Did you add any pressure? A lot of people recommend letting the weight of the machine do the work, but I've found that for paint correction you need to apply pressure, so you can at least build up a little bit of heat.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.I personally think i just didnt go slow enough.Im going to ditch the sponge and the #9 also.Im going with a wash mit and some poor boy products next time.Ill be back posting some pictures of my results next time. Thanks again for the help.

Also can anyone recommend a good glass cleaner?

ya i am. did you try that eagle one yet? i have only used stoners

Yeah i just used it earlier today and i liked the results.I was using windex before but it seemed to not work as well as the eagle one 20/20.It could also be my new m/f towel though.Anyway i wanted to get some stoners but i never see any at autozone.Im going to be detailing two more cars soon with some poor boy products and hope to get some better results with more practice and patience.
