First attempt at swirl remover - didn't work

Ok, I tried the orange pad ( I got the Autopia pad kit; white/orange/gray) with Meg's #2 followed by the white pad with Meg's #9. Looks better, but after doing it twice, many swirls are still there. Should I be using the #9 on the orange cutting pad instead of the #2? Also, I am working it slowly on speed 4.5 on the PC until it looks very hazy and almost gone. Am I doing it long enough???

Thanks in advance!

Fine Cut Cleaner supposedly now is meant mainly for Rotary. This is not to say that its cleaning qualities won't work by PC or hand, but I think most of its potential requires the heat of the rotary. SMR is a good product but it is also very mild. I think you need something more along the lines of DACP (if you're sticking with the Meguiar line). Just my opinion though.

I originally tried using meguiars swirl remover 2.0 before I searched and found this forum.... I had the same results as you did- not satisfactory at ALL. So after asking around I ended up buying poorboys ssr2 and ssr1. I also found that using the white pad to apply both of those, and running it at a 5 speed setting on my porter cable seemed to be the only thing that started to remove the swirls. After doing this, and only gaining by removing half the swirls, I then applied klasse aio on a 3 speed setting with the white pad, this was a major step in improving the looks. Now I think I'll apply two coats of klasse sealant glaze/finishing pad and then ex-p by hand to finish up.

after all this work, I hope to be able to just wash/clay/ex-p from now on, except for the occasional swirls that I keep finding.

hope this helps

Thanks very much for your replies.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is DACP? I can't find any reference and the letters don't seem to spell anything out on Meg's site.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the help, and especially the link!

My local shop that carries Meg's products and 3M stuff was closed by the time I got there, so I ended up using what I had.

I used Meg's Fine Cut Cleaner followed by the #9 Swirl. It did take out many, many scratches and swirls, I was just hoping for more. I'll also admit, that as this was my first time on the PC, I was probably more comfy with an easier compound.

The car was a daily driver for 4 years after the paint job, and now gets driven about 100 hundred miles a week. In a State where gravel is put down in the winter, you get some nice small pebbles skipping accross the body panels.

I am pleased overall with the car though. The shine REALLY came up, many of the scratches are gone, and it was nice and easy buffing the wax with the gray waxing pad on my PC. I don't see ever going back to doing this all by hand, the results are that dramatic. A friend already saw the car and couldn't believe the difference.

Thanks for all the help, and the great board here!

dreinecke- Next time you polish, try speeding the PC up to 5 or 6. I do almost all of my PC polishing at 6.

Don't hesitate to try other products. I've found that *I* prefer 3M and 1Z polishes (and Menzerna's FP). Everyone has preferences, and not everyone is happy with the same products.

3M's PI-III line has some very good products in it, you might want to check it out.

Accumulator is correct with the PC You will need to Set Speed High. You may need to experiment with the pads to find how agressive a pad works. As far as product Look for something that uses a very fine micro polish. Avoid products with fillers or glazes. They will only conseal the imperfections.

Other than that just take your time An orbital will get result slower than a Buffer but will be much safer if not experienced
