Fellas,



We just took a look at a customers car that has just been returned from the body shop after a small fender bender. The Rt. Rear 1/4 was hit and, as per usual, the body shop put color only where they needed then cleared the entire 1/4. Problem is, they did a bit of the typical wet sanding to facilitate adhesion of the clear on the existing color. So, you can now see thru the new clear where they had done a bit of sanding and the orange peel is showing thru. So, do we risk running thruough the new clear and get to the old finish or, is it likely we will be unable to feather in the new from the old??

I would tell the client to send it back and have them fix it properly...



I had a guy who was going to give me his M3 for a couple days...back half repainted...whole car looked terrible from the body shop detail (holograms and trails all over - black car that looked grey!) When I saw the car, I realized the massive amounts of orange peel on the back half, and almost none on the front half! It would have ran a bill over 3K with a time estimate for me to "try" and knock it down/close...



I told him to just take it back and point it out to the GM of the place....low and behold, the shop is honoring his request and fixing the issue...then I get it to give it a true detail!
 
thanks Eric!! That's what we initially suggested. They had the car for three months and he's afraid they will keep it for most of the summer, if he takes it back. Told him that if he waits and has us do some work prior to taking it back, they may not honor their guarantee.

I bet if he talks to the person in charge and tells him fix it right or else (insert threat of choice here) it'll be taken care of well. You shouldn't be the one trying to fix a body shops obvious mistakes. Fixing a few swirls and such is expected but they hosed the paint job. This guy obviously wants his car to look perfect. If you take on the job guess what happens? You're neck is now in the noose and you don't even know if it will come out perfect with that they did to it. I would pass on the job personally. Not worth the legal nightmare that seems to be brewing there.
 
Yes they are right, take it back. They obviously dont know how to do proper blend jobs and crappy preping. If you can see where the blending of the clear ended on a panel then if you dry buffing or wetsanding then it will start cutting the clear down and moving on up and panel and never melt in like you may think it will. That's why when I do blend jobs I dont use materials you can put in clear that will melt to the original panel, if it's a bumper I just paint the entire bumper, if it's a quarter I will do the whole quarter all the way above the doors to the front fender if I have to. Do it right, take your time and do not cut corners with paint and you will be fine. Most body shops are horrible for this and it is VERY hard to find one that does things right. They always try to cut corners to save time and materials and half of them are on drugs or are drunks.
 
Just talked to the guys who's M3 I said to take back...he got it done and now has it back...two weeks from now I should be working on it! Its going to be a huge turn around difference! I am hoping he wants me to spend a couple days on it (and pay for it), not just a quickie!
