Finally used a rotary for the first time

makita with LC white pad, 5.5" on a black Caddy CTS, with megs 83.

At times it was smooth going, but at other times the makita wanted to pull me here and there all of a sudden, I couldn't figure out why. The combo at 1500rpm worked well to remove all but the deepest swirls and scratches, but the whole process was so nerve wrecking, I don't know how you guys do this everyday lol.

How can I prevent the Makita from pulling is a random direction on it's own? Does a 4" pad pull also? My painter only uses 3M pads, the ones with ridges, is a flat pad the culprit?

Make sure that the buffer and your work is 90 degrees. I always keep the buffer pointing up and move the from side to side. That helped me out alot when I was first using a rotary.
