Few questions about 6" GG and pads on a new car.

Hey guys just picked up a GG 6" polisher and was curious what pads to get.

I have a 3 month old mustang that got its run thru a car wash about 4 times unfortunately. So it has some, but minor swirlies. Not too familiar with the GG, will Lake Country pads work on the GG with the backing plate it comes with?!

I was thinking going with the following:

LC Tangerine Pad

Meg's 205

What are some of your Insights?! Too light of a combo for my task?! Would u advise using a different pad?! Thanks guys!

PS, trying to get an order in tonight before the sales end at 12!!

Just order some cutting, polishing and finishing pads and get 105/205. You'll end up getting them later anyway and it will get rid of the frustration factor.

Is m105/205 the polish of choice or are their better/easier options. Or do most people prefer the megs?

Also does 205 always have to follow 105 if u use it? I'd like polishing to just be a one step job lol, although I know on serious paint correction that won't be the case

I've detailed a couple newer Mustang's recently and found the paint to be VERY VERY HARD and difficult to correct. I'm with Dan on this, get the whole range of pads and 105/205 and you'll be set.

Based on my experience 205 won't cut it even for what appears to be rather light swirls on the newer Mustang's. 105 tends to finish down OK on hard paints but I've never been able to just go straight from 105 to an LSP, should always follow with 205 to clean up hazing and bring out gloss / depth.

Some sorta-random thoughts follow:

Regulars here know that I use/recommend M105 for serious correction, but I don't consider it all that user-friendly. Similarly, the oils in M205 can drive me nuts on some paints.

If I don't *need* all the cut of M105, I'd much rather use Optimum Hyper Compound, which is very user-friendly.

I just recently tried UNO for the first time, with a Meguiar's MF cutting pad, and it corrected Audi clear almost as quickly as M105 and was *MUCH* more user-friendly. Considering I'd never used it before, and haven't spent any time really "learning" the product, that really impressed me.

While some people here can finish out OK with M105, I can't do it, not even on really hard clear.

I find 1Z High Gloss finishes about the same as M205 (at least on hard clear), but without all the oily hassle. Haven't tried finishing with UNO as I didn't want to spend time/clear on that as opposed to just finishing with the 1Z.

No, the preceding is *NOT* some "don't buy it!" slam at M105/M205, just some food for thought.

So I guess I need to pick up some more pads to do the whole car cause I really wouldnt want to keep stopping to clean. I'd rather just clean everything when finished.

What style pads do you guys prefer? The Lake Country Hydro pads are no good cause they are for water based and 105/205 is oil, correct? I think the pad I got was a flat foam (tangerine). Im totally new to using pads and polishers so not too sure on all this. And at $12 a pop I dont want to just be tossing money away.

So technically I shouldnt be using the 105 with the tangerine pad, I should be using a finishing pad??? Unless I am only using the 105 by itself? Little lost on this...

The car is gonna sit most of the winter so I really just want to get a good layer of protection on it. So removing the swirls isnt priority 1 right now. 105 and then LSP I will still be getting a good shine/protection right? Just maybe with swirls still there. Ill make the swirl removal my spring project if it doesnt go as planned.

Thanks again, you guys are a huge help. :xyxthumbs:thx

I'll try to address your Qs, but I hardly ever buy pads and am not all that current on what's out there these days. See what others say and compare it to my response.

AFAIK it's fine to use the LC Hydrotech pads with M105/M205. I, and probably most here, prefer flat pads for use with the PC/GG/etc.

For aggressive correction, the new MF cutting pads are *VERY* good. I've only used the ones from Meguiar's.

It's understandable that you're confused, this stuff can be tricky. Unfortunately nobody can *really* say what combo will be best for you but I'll try to offer some guidance.

M105 is the really aggressive stuff; M205 is the milder, "finishing" polish.

The M105 is kinda aggressive for use with the Tangerine pad. Some people do really well with M105 on mild pads, but not me. I only use that combo if I need a step-down between really aggressive M105 work and M205 (and that's not all that often).

IMO the Tangerine pad is better matched to M205, but that won't be very aggressive so it won't do much correction.

Use M205 for that (instead of M105, maybe you just made a typo..) and it should work out that way. You can try to do the real correction later, maybe working one panel at a time, while the rest of the car is still shiny and protected.
