Definitely get a clear coat paint job. The clear helps protect your car from UV damage and other elements. It also gives the car a very nice shine. I always said that if I ever painted a car I'd insist on the painter to use 2-3 coats of clear as it will make the color even shinier. Laters

<strong class='bbc'>Pros? Cons? Price difference? [/b]</blockquote>I'm not sure that they would even paint a car w/out a clear these days. Whatever the price, it's worth it.

Just out of curiousity - what do you guys think a 2 stage paint job on a mid-sized car would run these days?

Not talking a showcar, or a lamborghini - I've got a bunch of key marks on my wife's Accord (her reward for being a public school teacher and having to park on the street :( ) A neighbor left us a small ding pulling out of his driveway, and I figured I'd repair all of the marks on the car at once - I'm thinking a paint job might even be the better thing to do, at this stage. Of course - if it runs $2k or more, maybe not...

tend to be "darker" and "deeper" (I guess due to the shine and brightness of the clear coat) but you won't have the protection and when sun-damaged tends to fade bad. (If not kept up)

I always wondered about those paint jobs from Earl Sheib and the like. I've seen some pretty decent paint jobs on some of those cars for 500-800 bucks from Maaco. (Same color only, they are not good at changing colors) Unless your going to keep the car for years, I would not waste tons of money on an expensive paint job. Go to the Maaco's and Sheib's and look at cars they have painted and see if the quality is sufficient for you. Check out the body shops also, but try to see a painted car then make up your mind. Most people don't keep cars for long and when cared for a decent paint job will last. (Note: CARED FOR) I had an aftermarket paint job and waxed the heck out of it and it looked pretty good, hard for me to tell the difference from a factory finish, only a bodyshop/paint guy could tell.
