EX-P Questions, Please Help!

I just put on my first layer of EX-P with my PC (black finishing pad at speed 3). I heard from other that I shouldn't put the second layer on with the PC because it will strip off some of the first layer of EX-P, is that true? How should I apply it by hand? Lastly, I know you have to wait 24 hours for the first layer to cure. Would it hurt if I put my second layer on after waiting for 20-22 hours instead of 24?

M3_POWER, I don't use the PC to apply EX or EX-P just because they are so darned easy to apply by hand, but I know people do apply it by PC claiming they can get a thinner, more even application. I don't doubt that one bit.

For the second application, I would definitely apply by hand. The mechanics of the PC spinning a foam pad would likely abrade (if only slightly) the EX-P.

To apply by hand, grab a quality foam pad (my favorite is the "blue doorknob" by Viking, easy to grip and applies liquids and pastes with ease.

I think 24 hours is possibly an optimum "suggestion". I've applied 2nd and 3rd applications allowing only 12 hours in between and seen no problems. IMO the 3rd application maxes out the ROI of this product, but you can certainly be happy with only 1 or 2 applications. FWIW, on my first application, I will go over the surface twice just to ensure complete coverage.

I agree with Mr. Clean. I think I remember reading a post from awhile ago by Poorboy too saying that the following layers should always be done by hand, because a spinning foam pad on a PC will remove the previous layer(s).

If it were me I would put on a layer let it dry and buff off. Then put on another layer and let it dry then buff off. This will insure complete coverage of the area with the sealant. Then I would wait twenty four hours to add any additional products. I also would apply all of the EX by hand.

Thanks guys. Should the foam applicator be damp? After I put on my last layer of EX-P it will be fine to put on a layer of natty's blue right away?

CWCAD, you live in Fairbanks? I moved there for aobut two years when I was 10. I really loved that place. I lived by chena pumps (have no idea how it's spelled).

Good advice here and from the other posters :)
Two immediate coats ensures complete coverage either by hand or machine. Following coats should be done by hand after 12-24 hours...

Well I do not live there any more but I do go there for the construction season to make a living. Go down Chena Pump often to visit friends. Presently I live in an apartment complex for working stiffs jsut of the north end of the airport runway. Good thing I am a sound sleeper.:)

Yes, a squirt of S&G or S&W would do you well when applying your sealant using a MF applicator of foam pad. You can add a squirt before applying each panel.

I would wait for twenty four hours before adding Natty's just to make sure that the sealant is cured.

Awesome!

So I do have to wait 24 hours for the Ex-P to cure before I add natty's blue?

There are too many variables to give an exact time...heat will make it cure faster, humidity slower ....etc...sealants in general get harder in the 36-72 hour range..if you are planning on covering with a wax and re-waxing in a month or two then ..you really don't have to wait too long..

So the wax will be affected not the sealant (if I add natty's right after EX-P), is that what you are getting at?

the point of this thread was to find out the curing time of a sealant. Steve stated that there were variables in the time that is takes for a sealant to cure. If you are going to add natty's over the sealant it really does not matter as long as you will be re-applying in amonth or so.

The Natty's that you are talking about has nothing to do with cure time. Natty's is a wipe on wipe off product. Or you can let it haze and wipe off. Either way the cure time is for the sealant not Natty's. It could be as little as 12 hours or up to 36 hours. It depends on the variables that Steve mentioned.

Your questions have been answered by almost every poster in this thread.

If I have already waxed with Natty's red, what do I have to do to get the wax off so I can apply the EX-P then wax?

you can use a polish, preferably something like Pro Polish especially if you are not looking to remove swirls. You could also use Polish w/ Sealant as a set up to EX-P:)
