OK, not a lot of bragging goin' on in this one ... :doh ...here’s a quickee polish/glaze/seal job on my daily driver. The paint is tired, sandblasted and chipped on the hood. The horizontal surfaces on this car are really showing the effects of 12 years of acid rain damage in New England. There’s only so much improvement I’ve been able to achieve. I probably should have polished with the yellow wool and the Presta UCCL, but didn’t feel like it. I wasn’t looking for a bigger “project. So, I aggressively polished the hood and fenders with Presta blue wool + their fabulous #1500 polish. Fenders look great, hood still has a cloudy appearance, surfaces are ultra-smooth and clean unlike I’ve seen previously. Presta wool does a kick-azz job!
On the passenger side I used a (30:70) blend of Clearkote’s RMMG with Collinite’s Insulator Wax. The resulting liquid is quite thin - - thinner than I would have expected.
I applied both sides of the hood and fenders with the PC and a polishing pad. I let everything cure for about 15 minutes. The blend side wiped off with extreme ease. The RMMG topped w/845 required a bit more effort.
It was immediately apparent that the RMMG topped w/845 (driver’s side) had a superior gloss…no question about it. You can also see some notable differences in the beading fotos from later in the day when I washed the car.
I had three light sources when taking these pictures: Incandescent, 1000W halogen and the overhead fluorescent. This harsh lighting makes the surface appear far worse than it really is. Overall paint condition, gloss, slickness, etc. looks very decent under natural light. There’s still a fair amount of etching from water spots on the hood, roof and deck lid. Next time I'm motivated I'll try yellow wool and the UCCL to see if I can achieve some additional improvement.
Tools:
Before:
Post polishing phase:
Blend on passenger side, RMMG followed by 845 on driver's side:
Some cloudiness relieved:
Washed later in the day:
Paint color, depth, gloss all look nice under natural lighting:
Look at the difference in the sheeting in the second wash foto. The 2 step side sheeted almost completely. The blend side shows poorly organized beading and not as much sheeting action.
I washed the Presta pad when I was done. I little APC followed by a little soak time and a couple of quick rinses. Pad looked like new with almost no effort :xyxthumbs
