GOT PREP?
On Saturday I organized a "detail day" for members of a local forum. Everyone paid $15 each and we covered washing/drying correctly, clay usage, defect removal by hand, using the PC.

We started at 10:30 and ended around 4:00. I had a lot of fun, it was no a money making venture, but I think everyone learned something that they will stick with them forever.

We started off the day by having a "classroom session" of sorts, complete with visual aids. :D Sorry for the lack of seating everyone!!!

We had a nice turn out IMO

After the classroom session, the pizza arrived. We had just finished discussing the things that people do to their cars without even thinking about it..........CASE IN POINT!!

We then took a look at everyone's cars and decided which ones to demo on. After choosing them we started the "hands on" part of the day.

First up was engine detailing. We used a heavy duty degreaser to remove most of the "gunk" then scrubbed with various brushes, rinsed, and dressed with Meguiars #40 cut 50/50 with water.

We then pulled in the demo for defect removal. This was Kyle's ( fellow forum member) 99 turbo charged SI. Kyle bought the car used and apparently the owner washed/dried it with the improper tools and or techniques.

We first used a QD to remove dust, next everyone pitched in and used clay. For some people this was thier first time using clay and I think they found that it was easier than they thought.

Now that the paint had been clayed it was ready for polishing. First I wanted to demo how one can remove defects by using OTC products.

I used Meguiars scratchX with a folded 100% cotton terry cloth towel folded into quaters. I rubbed vigorously then removed the residue with MF. I then switched to a foam pad and proceeded with another application of scratchX. Now that the paint had been cleaned I used a foam applicator to apply one coat od Meguiars Deep Crystal #2. I rubbed the polish in and then removed with MF. Finally we applied a thin coat of Meguiars NXT tech wax and waited approximately 15 minutes before removing.

This section of the hood was untouched, you can see the swirls and other defects.

This side was the area polished by hand. The results look great, but for complete swirl removal a machine will be needed.

We then pulled the car back into the garage and began to demo the porter cable.

When using the porter cable I decided to show people the results that are achievable if they are willing to look a little harder for products. I did not use boutique products becasue while they work really well, most people still want products that they can get locally. We used two products form the Meguiars professional line.

We first polished with Meguiars #83 dual action cleaner polish, then used the #80 speed glaze, and follwed with one thin coat of NXT tech wax. we removed all products with MF:

Note the swirls on the unpolished section to the left.

We then allowed EVERYONE to use the porter cable. It made fast work of polishing the civic.

ANYONE can use the porter cable!!

Everyone pitched in to remove the final coat of NXT tech wax.

We also took a bit of time to help a fellow forum member remove some minor marring from his bike. The marring was very minor and we cleaned it using Poorboys SSR2 with a MF applicator. I also used a bit of 1Z ultra to remove some heavier scratches near the front seat(thanks for the tip accumulator!!). We then sealed with trade secret carnauba paste wax.

Nice job. Looked like a lot of fun and well planned tutorial. :bow

Hope you didn't let all our tricks out the bag. ;)

Potentially some new Autopians. :woot:

Very, very cool!! :xyxthumbs

That was awesome of you to do that.

Plus you showed the world that over the counter, basic consumer goods (ScratchX, Deep Crystal, and NXT) by hand with a terry towel will do wonders :up PREP, PREP, PREP!! It's all in the prep.

I like the pizza guy :p He looks like what one too may doobies will do to you :D I am assuming the pies were on the hood of his car ;)

Hey, next time you can charge a real fee and make some $$$. Maybe hook up with other local clubs and offer it.

Wished you showed your wheel acid cleaner in action!

Again, nice work and great photos.

Am I the only guy that sees one picture in this thread? Also I don't see any cars.. where are the cars? :D

Thanks!! Yeah, I think the way to do it would be to have a line of products that you sell. You would demonstrate the products during the class, then clean up afterwards with the sales. I will definitely look into putting something together for car clubs, great idea!

Thanks to everyone else!!

That was definitely the pizza guy's car. I just thought it was too funny!!

Yes, yes it is ;)

Looks like you guys had alot of fun.

BTW, next time you see the owner of the car, congradulate him for me. I love how he's got the exterior basically stock and very clean, but turbo'd the sucker at the same time. Perfect car, IMO. :xyxthumbs

Great day! We're getting ready to move to a townhouse community and I'm looking forward to having neighbors I can do this kind of thing with.

Show those pics to the naysayers that say you can't remove swirls with a PC!

Wow is all I can say about that fine young lady. And working a power tool makes her that much more attractive!!!!

Oh yeah looks like you guys had a good session.

Great job. A bunch of guys in my GN club are begging for details, I should just hold a session for them.

From an old proverb..."You can feed a village fish for as long as you can keep up with them, or you can teach a village to fish and feed them for an eternity"

Excellent job, and no i won't make any comment on the blonde like everyone else;)
