Dyson Root 6 Handheld Vac, A Review

Super Enthusiast
Well I bought this at Target yesterday having been impressed with the regular upright vacuum my brother has which I tried recently. I'm a big fan of James Dyson's work and for some time I have been asking them to create a shopvac using their cyclone technology so when the Root 6 came out I had to try it.

Here is a pic:

The unit is exceptionally well designed and beautiful to behold and has a 21.6V lithium rechargeable battery available for wall mounting. My hope was this could be a convenient way to do a quick and dirty vacuum of my car seats every other day thereby helping to control dust and dirt.

Unfortunately the vacuum like all handhelds I have tried does not have enough suction. The cyclones do keep the suction steady but there simply isn't enough lift to start with. You can still use it for vacing the car but it does not have any where near the lift of a MetroVac, still the champion in my garage. There are two other problems. The charge does not hold for more than 20-25 minutes at full power. I would have expected better for a 21.6V lithium judging from the longevity of my 18V DeWalt drills. Thirdly, the price is horribly high at $150 for such a simple device. Still I would have kept the vac if the suction was better.

Not recommended. I returned mine to Target for a refund today.

I still hold out hope we get a full power AC corded shopvac from this otherwise superb UK company.

Thanks for the review. Looks like something from a Star Wars movie!

I've not found a handheld that can compare with a good corded vac. It would be great if someone could come up with one, though.

One day someone will invent a powerful handheld. I just wish someone would create one with a cord so power is not the limiting factor.

Has anyone tried the new smaller MetroVac?

Hehe, it does look a lot like something from a Star Wars movie :) It's like a laser weapon or something :). In my opinion, corded vacs don't cause too much of a problem if you're vacuuming the car. I just place my vacuum (brand spankin' new ridgid 12 gallon vac) next to the car door and use the hose to reach the areas that I need to vacuum.

The reason its battery doensn't last very long is because they want it ALWAYS running at full suction. Once th voltage runs below 21.6 it stops!

Actually, from what I heard the dyson only lasts 5 minutes at full power after a full charge. If it could go for 20-25 minutes I'd probably want one over all the other dustbusters.
