Dust and quick detailers

This is a topic i have long wondered about. It doesnt take long for my car to collect a TON of dust after i wash it. By the next day my car is covered top to bottom in dust. I know that QD's can be used to remove it but does it marr paint? I have always been scared to wipe down my paint when its all dusty. I just seems like i would be rubbing all the dust into the clearcoat and scratching it. Is this true? Is there a certain amount of time until the dust gets too thick to remove just with a QD? Or should i just wash my car everyday?

I've used the Ca. Duster for years, and it hasn't created a problem. It's perfect for dusting (especially after using some waxes). Of course I'm no professional, so I'll wait for them to chime in...

I also use the CA duster for a few years now. I didn't have any problems as far as creating swirls. I do a lot of QD on my car as well. I think before I didn't use MF it created swirls on my finish. I used to use a cotton tshirt :nervous2:

Now, I'm very careful, and have not seen anymore swirls since then.

Of course when it's dirty after it rains, then I'd wash it. But, for a quick "detailed" look, the QD is great.

I have Jeffs Werkstatts Quick Wash for only my clearbra which covers portions of my hood and then my whole bumper. I think it's best to get rid of all the bugs and dirt to keep my car looking great.

I used to use NXT quick detail spray but switched over to Z-6. Z-6 leaves an excellent gloss apperance and is very slick. After I used the JW QW, I would give a quick wipe down of Z-6.

I also have used the Ca duster and while I have never experienced "major" marring it does introduce fine scratches to your finish. I have also experienced the same using a spray type QD and towel. But like i said, nothing major, these go away once I put the PC to it every 3-4 months, and go away easily.

If you think about it logically, dust is an abrasive, you wipe that abrasive along your clear coat it is going to scratch regardless of the brand of QD used, type of towel used, temp of the auto body so on & so on. Again, it's not going to be like you took your car through an automated car wash but you will end up with fine scratches over time. Until a type of magnet is invented that you can wave over the car to suck off the dust without actually touching the pain you'll always have some marring using QDs Dusters etc.

I rigged up my air compressor so that i can blast the car with the air hose to blow off the dust rather than wipe it off. That system seems to help in keeping the marring to a minimum but does nothing to knock bird crap off the car.

good luck.

I use the duster, then QD my ride. I figure the duster takes off major dust particles, then the QD brightens everything up nicely.

I use a CA car duster and then follow up with Poorboy's Spray and Wipe. Or if I'm lazy I'll just go over with the Spray and Wipe... no concerns of marring at all... but you wouldn't be able to do the things S&W does with a QD...

Air compressor works good. It's still going to leave a thin layer of dust on there though. Can't blow it all off. I wash once a week and only use QD in between washes for removing finger prints, bird crap and whatever else. I never use QD to dust off an entire panel. Way too much chance for marring. Same with California dusters. If you are worried about swirls, wash once a week with a safe method and touch it as least as possible in between. You could try a light car cover but those things are a pain. You probably shouldn't wash your car daily. Even proper washing is going to induce swirls eventually. I have a jet black bimmer and it's been a task keeping it nice and shiny. Sometimes you just have to live with a coat of dust for a few days!

Just remember: every time you touch your finish, you're taking a chance at micro marring it. It's best to wash off any dirt, dust or debri before washing. Otherwise, something is bound to happen and show up over time.

Very true!

The CA dusters I have never used because they are impregnated with wax apparently

If I ever do use a QD, it's usually one with alot of lubricant and sealant

Any car with a day or two's dust accumulation gets soaked in spray and I blot it with a towel and then put that towel aside, spray again and then wipe with absolutely no pressure. I'm just kissing the surface

After that, another towel finishes it off.

My uncle a while back suggested finding a way to charge the body so that dust is not attracted. Not sure if it was negative or positive. I wonder if there is a way to do this yet.

You could just rinse it with a hose (free-flowing from the hose end) prior to QDing if it is loose dust. The water sheeting would take most of it off if you have a good slick surface. I don't see a need to "wash" it daily with shampoo if it's only dusty.

Sames as others, I use the CA duster, which I've owned for roughly 7-8 years, the follow up with TWP Ultra Gloss QD.

Cars are postively charged as they drive down the road. That's one of the reasons why dust sticks to them. They make a grounding strap that hangs on the frame of your car and drags on the ground causing your vehicle to stay neutral and not attract dust.
